A shootout with law enforcement in Sequatchie County ended with one man dead.

Sequatchie County, Tenn., sheriff's officers in two patrol cars arrived at a home off East Valley Road on Tuesday to serve a felony warrant with no reason to expect a violent encounter.

Now the man they came to arrest is dead after a shootout with authorities, Sequatchie County Sheriff Ronnie Hitchcock confirmed.

Hitchcock said that when deputies pulled in to the home near B L Road, the shooter was in his car. Officers exited their cars, and then the shooter opened fire with a 9 mm semiautomatic weapon.

After officers returned fire, there was a break in the shooting and when it resumed the man was killed, Hitchcock said.

"Apparently he was planning on going and doing something today," Hitchcock said in reference to the dead man who had on a bulletproof vest.

No deputies were injured in the incident, although their patrol cars sustained damage.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is handling the case.
