Hollie GermanLee University senior guard Hollie German beat out 13 other nominees in being chosen the National Christian College Athletic Association Division I national women's basketball player of the week. The 5-foot-9 former Polk County High School star scored 25 and a career-high 38 points as the Lady Flames won Gulf South Conference road games at West Alabama and Alabama-Huntsville last week. She was 13-of-27 on 3-point shots in the two games and added seven assists in Saturday's win. German is averaging 25.9 points and shooting 45.1 percent from behind the arc for the season, and she is fifth in Lady Flames career scoring with 1,955 points -- five out of fourth place. Lee's teams host West Georgia on Thursday.
• Tennessee Wesleyan College had both Appalachian Athletic Association basketball players of the week, including Armeka Booker as the women's selection for the third time this season. TWC's Tyler Burse from LaFayette, Ga., was the men's honoree after racking up 29 points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots in a home win over Point and 33 points and eight rebounds in a victory at Montreat. He was 13-of-16 from the field, 5-of-7 on 3s and 2-of-2 on free throws against Montreat. Booker, who's from Oak Ridge, had 18 points, six rebounds and two blocks in a defeat of Point and 20 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in a win at Montreat.
• Dalton State College improved to 20-2 in its first season of men's basketball with an 84-70 win Tuesday night at Tennessee Temple. Ricky Sears scored 16 points to lead the winning Roadrunners, while Sean Tate scored 14 and Preston Earle and Demetrice Jacobs each added 13. LaDaris Green had a game-high 14 reobunds. For the Crusaders (10-9), Elliot Johnson scored 18 points, Weedlins Beauvil scored 14 and Jade Patrick and Hampton Mack tallied 10 each, while Jalen Smith had 10 rebounds with eight points.
Soccer
• The Lee University men's soccer team received the prestigious Layton Shoemaker Sportsmanship Award at the NSCAA national convention in Philadelphia this past weekend. It was presented by the NCCAA and the National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association in an ongoing tribute to the deceased longtime coach at Messiah College. "This is a special honor in that it recognizes what we are really striving for," Flames coach Paul Furey said in a Lee release. "We want to represent Lee, the NCCAA and our faith in a way that makes us different. Not that we are perfect all the time, but we strive to bring honor to Christ in the way we compete. I've always had the utmost respect for Layton Shoemaker." Furey's Flames went 13-5-6 in 2013 and lost 1-0 in the NCCAA Division I national championship game.
Track & Field
• Kevin Yates finished third in the long jump (20.06-5) at the KYA High School Indoor Classic track and field meet last weekend at East Tennessee State University, and Chattanooga Jets teammates Alexis Wilson and McKenzie Ethridge also medaled and had two top-eight finishes apiece in the girls' 60- and 200-meter dashes. Wilson was fourth in the 60, eighth in the 200; Ethridge was sixth in the 60, seventh in the 200. Kiana Davis was ninth in the 60 and 11th in the 200. The Jets' Haleigh Montgomery was eighth in the 60 hurdles, Chase Merrell was 12th in the boys' 60 and 18th in the 200 and Alexis Reviere was 20th in the girls' 800.
Softball
• The Lady Moc RBI Club is hosting the annual fundraising pancake breakfast for the UTC softball team Saturday at the Applebee's in Northgate Mall. It will run from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. and cost $6, payable at the door. Coaches and players will serve the patrons and then be available for conversation. "The pancake breakfast has always been a great fundraiser, but that's not the only reason we have it," coach Frank Reed said. "It's an opportunity for fans to have breakfast and interact with the players, and it's also a great time for the student-athletes to meet their fans face to face and see who cheers them on."
