Covenant's Sceggel gets national honor and other sports news

Covenant split its USA South Athletic Conference basketball doubleheader Wednesday thanks to the men pulling out a 98-95 overtime victory at LaGrange. The Lady Scots lost 62-50 in the opener. Nate Frierson scored the last two of his 11 points on a layup with four seconds left in overtime and gave Covenant (8-10, 3-4) a one-point lead. Daniel Garrett, who sparked the Scots off the bench with 26 points on 9-of-10 shooting from the floor, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range, made a steal afterward and added two free throws with a second showing for the final margin. Colton McGriff contributed 21 points and had team-highs of 11 rebounds and three steals for Covenant. Robby Bell scored 17 and Frierson led with six assists. Covenant's Ben Phelps' only points were on a layup that made it 83-83 with two seconds to play, sending it to OT. Jessie Blankenship topped Covenant's women (4-12, 1-7) with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Alexis Storteboom added 13 points and Aleigha Williams scored 11. Morgan Woodward led the Lady Scots with six steals.

• Tennessee Wesleyan hosted Reinhardt in an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader Wednesday with he TWC women winning 65-47 and the men winning 100-98. Eleven played and nine scored for the Lady Bulldogs (13-3, 10-2), who were paced by Armeka Booker's 14 points. Cody Houck had 12 and seven rebounds and Shira Buley, Courtney Gobble and Bailey Lyness scored nine apiece. Buley was TWC's assists leader with eight, Lyness led with three steals and Houck and Alli Moreland each had three blocks. Former Dade County standout Erika Woodfin was one of Reinhardt's double-figure scorers, finishing with 10. Tyler Burse was the TWC men's top scorer with 31 points and Andrew Scofield made five 3-pointers on the way to 21 points. Devante Jenkins had 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Bulldogs and Shannon Smith had 14 points and nine assists.

• Bryan split its AAC doubleheader Wednesday at Virginia Intermont. The Lions won 94-85 behind Brandon Cole's 30 points and Bryan's women rallied from a 19-point halftime deficit but lost 77-76. Robert Troino supported Cole with 21 points and Derrick Walker contributed 19 and led the Bryan men (11-10, 7-4) with 11 rebounds. Caleb Tuck scored 10 points in the victory and Caleb Parsons chipped in with four steals. Bryan's Kristin Lane was fouled rebounding her own miss and had a chance to tie the game with two free throws with no time left, but missed the first before making the second. Taylor Neuharth led five Lady Lions in double-figure scoring with 17 points. Megan Billingsby scored 14 off the bench and Lane and Keila Formont totaled 12 apiece. Jenna Ray chipped in with 10. Rachel Calfee led the rebounding for the Bryan women (14-7, 9-3) with eight.
