Mustangs bowlers in state final and other sports news

The Walker Valley High School boys' bowling team faces Columbia Central for the TSSAA Division I state championship at 11:45 a.m. EST today in Smyrna. The balanced Mustangs won 18-9 over Hendersonville and 21.5-5.5 over Sevier County on Friday, while Columbia was beating Collierville 23-4 and lowering Upperman 18-9. The Walker Valley girls lost 19-8 to Wilson Central in the quarterfinals, while McCallie and Girls Preparatory School each won once before falling in the Division II semifinals, McCallie 19-8 to Friendship Christian and the Bruisers 22-5 to St. Agnes. GPS senior Madi Stanley was the only area bowler who reached the individual finals, as she was fifth in the DII semifinals with a 161.75 average and then wound up sixth. Teammate Taylor Reid was 17th. McCallie's Hyo Kim was 12th in DII boys with a 162 semifinal average, and teammates Luke Orthner and Graham Leech and Baylor's Sho Takiguchi were 17th, 19th and 20th. Central's Reggie Long was 16th in the DI semifinals at 178.75, and Warren County's Hailey Muncey and Stone Memorial's Sarah Wick were 11th and 14th in the girls' division at 157.75 and 157.25.

Baseball

• Former City High School star and Central High School coach Gary Rundles recently was inducted into the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, largely for his many years of collegiate success at Carson-Newman. He's about to begin his 15th season at the University of West Alabama. Rundles coached Central to 171 wins and the 1985 state championship, and he had 372 victories, five conference championships and two region titles in 13 years at Carson-Newman. "This is a great honor and I am very humbled by the fact that my peers believed I was deserving," Rundles said in a UWA release. "When I accepted this award, I accepted it on behalf of all the players I have had the privilege to coach and all the coaches I have coached with." Inducted in the Greater Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame in 2007, Rundles has been the Alabama Baseball Coaches coach of the year three times. He served one term as chairman of the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee.

Basketball

• Elliot Johnson had 23 points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots as Tennessee Temple beat visiting Florida College 83-60 in men's basketball Friday. Jalen Smith scored 11 points and Jarrett Smith had 14 rebounds and six assists with nine points for Temple. A.J. Williams had 22 points, nine rebounds and three steals in defeat.

• Jessie Blankenship's ninth consecutive double-double, 19 points and 10 rebounds, led Covenant College to a 65-50 USA South women's basketball win Friday at winless Mary Baldwin. Alexis Storteboom added 14 points and nine rebounds for the Lady Scots.

• Brandon Cole hit 14 of 15 free throws in scoring 36 points for Bryan College in a 78-73 nonconference win Friday over visiting Berea, and recently added Lions teammate Derrick Walker had 25 points on 9-of-11 field-goal shooting plus 11 rebounds.

• The Sewanee men's basketball team won 77-65 in Southern Athletic Association play Friday at Berry after going 14-of-21 from the field in the first half. Jorden Williams from McCallie continued his strong freshman season with 21 points and five assists for the Tigers (10-5, 3-2), while Seth Brown scored 16 points and Keshonn Carter had 12 points and nine rebounds. Clay Born from Baylor scored 10 points off the bench. Owen Jacobs led Berry with 16 points. Berry won the women's matchup 66-58 with Mel McLean and Chanlir Segarra providing 21 and 17 points, four and five assists and seven rebounds apiece. Jamie Chauvin paced Sewanee with 13 points and Paige Lowe and Casey Hassett added 12 each, while Kayla Sewell grabbed 10 rebounds.

• UTC women's basketball assistant Brittany Johnson will be the guest speaker for the Mocs Club "Breakfast With the Coach" this morning at 8:15 at Wally's Restaurant on McCallie Avenue, and the public is invited. Reservations are not taken.
