Bluff Trail reopened to public and other sports news

The segment of the Bluff Trail on Lookout Mountain that has been closed since Feb. 10 because of a washout about three-quarters of a mile north of Sunset Rock is open again for public use. The Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park made that announcement Thursday. The Bluff Trail is on the west side of the mountain and goes from near Point Park to the Ochs Gateway trail junction. Park officials credited volunteers from the Wild Trails organization for providing materials and labor to repair the trail.

• Chattanooga and the nearby Georgia towns of Blue Ridge, Blairsville and Ellijay all are among the 36 finalists in Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine's poll for top outdoor town in the Blue Ridge region, which reaches into Pennsylvania and also includes Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia and the Carolinas. The public can vote Aug. 1-31 at blueridgeoutdoors.com for their favorite, but all 36 will be included in the magazine's "outdoor towns" feature issue. The Tennessee finalists besides Chattanooga are Knoxville and Gatlinburg.

• The Chattanooga Football Club Academy under-14 girls' team will begin play next Thursday at 10 a.m. in the US Youth Soccer National Presidents Cup tournament at the MESA complex in Greenville, S.C. The CFC Academy girls' first game will be against West Coast FC United White; they then will face the PSC U14 Orange from Illinois on July 11 and Freedom from Pennsylvania on July 12, both also at 10 a.m. The championship and third-place games are set for 10:15 a.m. on July 13.
