about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

wonder how many right-wing sympathizers are going to weigh in with their reasons why our current medical system needs nothing at all in the way of reform.

Then they will offer that anyone who currently has no health insurance is a bum and deserves no assistance from ObamaCare.

Then we'll hear from those who truly believe that ObamaCare is going to bankrupt the nation.

In the meantime, reform is still underway, more and more are finding their way through the insurance maze, and ObamaCare is taking root in ground from where it cannot be pulled up.

Isn't life fun?

The bottom line to your wonder is this; They are happy tp pay into their employer's plan for reasonably good coverage; but they are vehemently opposed to the idea that everyone deserves reasonable medical care. Watch as the protests come in. You will read, why should I help any person get health care? Why should the government requirer all persons to get health care so the cost per capita drops? For me to get health care am I sustaining some low life who doesn't work get health insurance?

The solution you will hear folks like z-bister and connie and others say is, "Let them eat cake, get a job, quit leaching on me. Why should I have to subscribe to that evil African American, muslim President's health care plan. Nothing he proposes can possibly be constructive, and on and on and on. Besides he is the anti-Christ anyway."

Health care was reasonably accessible to indigents pre-AFA -- just ask Erlanger's CFO.

Reform doesn't mean, "Throw more of someone else's money at the problem" without regard to WHO's money is being thrown at, and WHY it is or isn't ethical to do so in the first place. That's typically the Progressive solution.

Unfortunately, Republicans, who are constantly outmaneuvered by Democrats and always on the defensive, continue to bumble and fail to produce any sort of alternative, creative, liberty-minded solution to the health care problem.

The intent is good, everyone should have access to adequate healthcare at a reasonable cost. However, the method or the as passed affordable health care act sucks and actually favors the insurers and providers more than the insured. The stupid republicans talk and talk but failed to insist on implementation as the law was written and scheduled which would have doomed it and required a better plan. Welfare programs such as the ACA, SS, Medicare, Medicaid, SSI, affordable housing etc. etc. should not be included in the general fund but accounted for separately and people taxed enough to fund them. There is no incentive for those getting a free ride to spend wisely, prevent abuse, misuse and fraud. Drugging, drinking and obesity are at epidemic levels and costing a healthcare fortune with no penalty to abusers.

It was due to a bug very similar to a staff infection. The bacterium caused an abscess, which when it burst, sent deadly gaseous gangrene surging up my body from my foot.

By the time it was found, the leg had to be amputated to save my life. It took two cuts to get the job done.

"Health care was reasonably accessible to indigents pre-AFA -- just ask Erlanger's CFO."

Absolutely. I am one of those people. I was uninsured last November, when this all happened.

"Reform doesn't mean, "Throw more of someone else's money at the problem" without regard to WHO's money is being thrown at, and WHY it is or isn't ethical to do so in the first place. That's typically the Progressive solution."

You offer this as if taxpayers are not already footing the bills for indigent and the uninsurable care today.

My amputation alone was more than $100,000 by the time I had completed the three week hospitalization. The bills are still sitting on my desk.

Georgia turned me down for Medicare (I have an Attorney working on it).

"Unfortunately, Republicans, who are constantly outmaneuvered by Democrats and always on the defensive, continue to bumble and fail to produce any sort of alternative, creative, liberty-minded solution to the health care problem."

Now that SIR, is a sensible statement, and I'm glad to read it coming from you. This too is my criticism of the Republican Party as well, and until they begin to work for all people, I refuse to support them in any manner.

Yet we have a First Lady, who is fervently trying to educate children to steer away from bad eating habits, and what does right-wing and Libertarian America do?

They condemn the woman for invading privacy rights.

If parents are not seeing to it that kids are not adopting good eating habits early in life, someone else must step up to the plate to help.

Look...I was not raised to eat the wrong things. My mother fixed good meals. My bad eating habits edged their way into the picture as a young adult.

My profession led to severe sedentary habits. For many years, fast food was almost every meal. I was always on the go. It simply got out of control.

By the time I realized what I was doing to myself, I suppose it was too late, but I changed my eating habits dramatically.

I've lost 155 lbs from my heaviest point. I am almost blood pressure medicine free. I use no less than half of the diabetic controlling medicine I used to use.

My A1C is 6.0 and has been there for a year. When I started, my A1C was 13.0

I rarely eat fast food. I eat home cooked meals twice a day, and I rarely ever get hungry.

At one point in my life, I'd be eating a meal and planning the next one. Food used to run my life. It was pitiful.

I would have probably died a couple of years ago, had I not started getting control of my health. As it is, I've been through hell to where I am now, and I have every reason to believe I will live a longer life than the one I was destined for a few years ago.

Agree with you there, but as Alprova just commented, if someone mentions healthier lunches or taking the vending machines out of the schools, Fox News makes it their top news story. How peoples' rights are being compromised. In NY, there was outrage when the mayor wanted a limit on the size of soda cups. It's very similar to when a smoker goes on a rant about their rights. The eating habits by a large portion of Americans are troubling. Pastors and other religious figures could do their congregation a favor by speaking of this behavior instead of encouraging the congregation to head out to Ryan's or Golden Corral after the service. But I guess gay-bashing is more entertaining for the audience.

fairmon, medicare is not welfare. People on medicare pay monthly premiums the same as anyone with private coverage. Under the ACA most who sign up will pay a monthly premium. They will now have better choices, better coverage at a cheaper rate. If republicans had their way, citizens without medical insurance who got sick or was injured and sought medical help would get patched up or stabilized at the emergency room then carted off to jail or prison for being uninsured. The same as someone without car insurance can now be arrested during a routine traffic stop. That wasn't suppose to be the case either. But someone ( fill in blank) went in and did some tweaking. Now Americans can go to jail, lose their driver license for failure to have car insurance much quicker than a drunk or drugged out driver who goes out and injure or kill someone driving while drunk or stoned.

Health care is not a right, especially when, I for one, want to retain the freedom to eat what I want, have bad habits if I want, and die early if I want. If the government takes over health care they will dictate everything for "our on good."

This is the usual liberal "we want the same forced outcome" no matter what it costs. I know that fiscal issues are beneath the perfect liberal but money doesn't grow on trees. It grows from wealth building done by the people you liberals like to criticize. I wish your employers knew how much you loath them. Why don't you walk into their office and tell them?

There was nothing wrong with our health care system. When the liberals started barking about the 30 million poor who needed health care, the cost would have been around 25 billion dollars to expand medicaid. The Republicans should have yelled yes, ..yes... 25 billion is a lot less than the trillion dollar debacle that we now have....but alas, the Republican establishment is as dumb as any liberal that has ever lived. They are just the other side of a bad penny.

The governor's decision not to take money from Washington for Medicaid, that was sent there by Tennessee tax payers has to one of the most bone-headed and irresponsible decisions every made by a politician, and purely on political grounds to pander to the Tea Party.

The people that are getting screwed here are working class folks that have no employer-based health care plans, but earn too much to qualify for TenCare. So what you have here is not only a moral issue - allowing people to become gravely sick and even die due to lack of preventive care, but also a financial issue by driving people to eventually seek treatment at an emergency room, at astronomical costs, which eventually get passed on to the those that pay for insurance and the taxpayers.

I hope people use this issue as a reason to throw the governor out on his ear, and thereby ending his own free, government paid-for health care.

"Jesus sinned"

"Jesus cannot be God"

"I do not fear the Lord and nobody is ever going to convince me to fear God's "wrath."

"And again, you fail to include the scripture I cited that proves that Jesus himself did not consider himself to be perfect and without sin."

An anti Christ cannot be a Christian! It cannot be any more simple than that!

Anti means against. An anti Christ denies that Jesus was God in the flesh.

And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: GOD WAS MANIFEST IN THE FLESH, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. 1 Timothy 3:16

And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come ; and even now already is it in the world 1 John 4:3 KJV

For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. 2 John 1:7

His behavior is antithetical to Christianity and in no way represents behavior guided by the Gospel. He demeans all Christians. He may well be a Christian but his public behavior is troubled and infantile and we should all recognize that and forgive his hostility.

No one can place themselves in a seat of knowledge to know whether to condemn or judge someone or not, without inviting judgment upon their own self. A primary Christian goal is sanctification, and a sanctified person carries no ill will in their heart, or harsh words towards anyone, only compassion, because he or she knows they carry the same burden of sin as the one they are tempted to criticize.

It's stupid. No one believes it. And you'll forever be on the wrong side of that issue, no matter how many times you type it.

He did get the "I'm just not your kind of Christian" right.

Mr. Anthony Provancher Has written: "Jesus cannot be God"

He has ridiculed and denied that God was manifested in the flesh:

"The very fact that Jesus was given birth, and came out as little helpless small baby is enough to refute the claim that Jesus is God."

"It is utter blasphemy to claim that God came out of a women like all people, it is utter blasphemy to claim God came out crying and screaming and being helpless and weak."

"Such nonsense is insulting to God; this itself is enough to prove Jesus is not God. How can you claim that God came out of a woman?"

"Are you mad? Are you insane? How can you insult God in such a manner? Some of you Christians should be ashamed of yourselves for ascribing such rubbish to God."

They condemn the woman for invading privacy rights.

If parents are not seeing to it that kids are not adopting good eating habits early in life, someone else must step up to the plate to help.

I Agree and admire her for the effort which is more educational than dictating to the country what they should eat for better health. I actually think she would likely be a better president than her husband which, in my opinion, would not be difficult to achieve.

My comments were not a reference to your personal situation or past eating habits. I see so many obese people eating like they may starve who are too fat to wipe their butt. I wonder how some of them were able to have sex and conceive those fat kids with them. I had to take my mother to a medical specialist and noticed over 90% of a large crowd in the waiting room were very over weight. I know that, but I am one of those who fell into some very bad habits and now I'm paying the price. My prognosis is very good for a long life, but I blame myself for most of my health issues.

"I see so many obese people eating like they may starve who are too fat to wipe their butt. I wonder how some of them were able to have sex and conceive those fat kids with them."

If I may at least attempt to explain...

When a person eats the wrong food, your cells scream for energy. You stay hungry. If you fail to provide proper nutrition, your body is deprived of what it needs and builds what it doesn't need, which is pure fat.

"I had to take my mother to a medical specialist and noticed over 90% of a large crowd in the waiting room were very over weight. I am sure in many cases their being there resulted from their bad health practices. It did irritate the hell out of me that I was helping pay their bills either in higher premiums or taxes."

I wish I could talk to people, for I have found what it takes to eat right, never feel hungry, and feel good all the time. I truly once was totally out of control. I STAYED hungry. I ate everything wrong. I weighed more than 400 pounds.

Getting my diabetes under complete control was the catalyst that started my weight loss, my appetite control. Sometimes, I have to force myself to eat. I don't get hungry.

"I predict your disability will be approved retroactively to the date you became disabled."

Sir, I gave up three months. My disability became automatic the minute I entered stage 4 kidney failure. Nothing has changed. I am still stage 4. I briefly was forced to dialyze this last month, following my heart surgery, but have since bounced back above the line again.

The perma-catheter was removed last week.

Eventually, I will have to undergo permanent dialysis, but I'm hoping to put that off for as long as possible.

So what do we do, sit around and debate how we stop more kids from coming in, or act to provide humanitarian treatment to those who are already here, and get some kind of rational immigration reform that involves control of the borders?

That is too radical an idea for Bohner. I guess he wants to let them eat cake, and give them a shovel to dig their graves before they expire, rather than do anything that looks like he agrees with a piece of legislation that African-American pinko (the term my family used to describe MLK, Jr.) President proposed. There is a lot of support for the government providing more but very little support of paying for it except the insistence by a majority now paying nothing or very little that someone else pay for everything.

AP NEWS RELEASE....

Each year, federal agencies are required to estimate the amount of improper payments they issue. They include overpayments, underpayments, payments to the wrong recipient and payments that were made without proper documentation.

a new report by the Government Accountability Office questions the accuracy of agency estimates, suggesting that the real tally could be higher. The GAO is the investigative arm of Congress.

The largest sources of improper payments are government health care programs, according to agency estimates. Medicare's various health insurance programs for older Americans accounted for $50 billion in improper payments in the 2013 budget year, far exceeding any other program.

The earned income tax credit, which provides payments to the working poor in the form of tax refunds. Last year, improper payments totaled $14.5 billion. That's 24 percent of all payments under the program.

Medicaid, the government health care program for the poor. Last year, improper payments totaled $14.4 billion.

No fraud is good, but if the budget is a trillion, 50 billion is about 5% too much and ought to require some discipline to fix it, but not worth calling up the national guard. If the earned income credit is being abused why not enforce it? What are you crying about, the existence of the credit or the way it is enforced?

As for the bigger picture, there would be no need for an earned income credit if those Christians and other compassionate religious people who are well off lent their hands, feet , body, soul and possessions to help those who need help rather than waste space on the internet typing in Large Font letters or griping about how bad things are.

The "boomers" did not create the deficit, it is caused overwhelmingly by the outrageous illegal wars of Bush the Younger who refused to raise taxes to pay for "our freedom from weapons of mass destruction," plus decades of right-wing supported excessive defense spending.

The bright side of our international debt is we hold all the cards internationally, everyone has a stake in the success of the USA in the form of US securities they have purchased. It still is the safest, rock-solid investment internationally.

Why do you call the heirs of the "Boomers" a "spoiled largely uneducated generation?" My children have college degrees and very nicely paying jobs keeping the Social Security Trust Fund liquid for you and me. I did not need to encourage them, they copied their parents model. NEW PRESSURES FOR SPECIAL PROSECUTOR ON IRS SCANDAL The fundamental question about the IRS targeting the president’s political enemies is whether it was corruption or incompetency. Not only does this suggest bad motives but casts further shadows on the agency’s claims that emails from Lerner and other figures in the targeting scandal were accidentally lost in a computer crash and are unrecoverable. Given Lerner’s apparent effort to obstruct investigators, the administration’s long-silent internal investigation looks less and less credible. smidgin

I agree that Bush contributed to the deficit and Obama has doubled it since he took over. Is there a point at which you think it may be too much? Those we owe may not be as concerned as you think with the demise of America. How many countries really like us and would not like to see us much weaker.

Largely uneducated are the key words. The same is true with my kids who both have degrees and good paying jobs but there are not enough in that category to keep social security in good health long term. Those good paying middle class jobs not requiring a degree have diminished to the point the social security Ponzi scheme cannot remain as is beyond around twenty years. Neither of our children and those like them can handle the debt which will continue to increase.

Fairmon,

If we step back and take a long view (that may not be much solace for you and me but is for our children and beyond), the projected demographics show the Trust Fund will turn around in the future.

The problem with so-called middle class jobs not requiring a degree seems at least two-fold. On one hand we all push for as low a price as we can and that drives jobs off shore to countries with low standards of living and shrinks those manufacturing jobs here. On the on the hand, that process can last only as long as there are skilled workers in countries with low standards of living. That is changing and manufacturing is the USA is on a resurgence.

The real issue is many of the jobs available do require skills that challenge a HS graduate and require post-secondary education, it is a fact of life. The jobs not requiring those skills are found where? In the service industry. The challenge, or the required investment in the future, is to motivate kids to get back in school, and that is going to take some kind of government-supported initiative as well as SERIOUS faith-based effort.

Much (not all) of the growth of the deficit under Obama is related to the wars that should have been shut down when he was elected. A second part of the deficit is temporary, it is the stimulus program that stopped us from sliding into the second Great Depression. The economy is turning around, according to the figures released to day, the numbers are better than at any time since 2008 when this chaos started. Economic growth equates to higher tax revenues.

But right now, there is no way to get meaningful legislation to fix the other problems of economic growth through the House because they are dead set on obstructing on principle of hate rather than compromise on every initiative the President proposes, even those that receive positive votes from Republican senators.

But right now, there is no way to get meaningful legislation to fix the other problems of economic growth through the House because they are dead set on obstructing on principle of hate rather than compromise on every initiative the President proposes, even those that receive positive votes from Republican senators.

You apparently believe the lies out of D.C., I don't and follow the financials and the economy primarily through investment opportunities and news. What are a couple of those proposals blocked that would help heal the wound?

inqmid said... manufacturing is the USA is on a resurgence.

Are you saying the net new number of manufacturing jobs are increasing? I don't think so and certainly not at a rate close to the number entering the work force. We do need to get out of any war since it is difficult to win using a service based industry with less manufacturing of materials from commodities that can hurt your foot if you drop a piece on it. Check out the average wage of those working. The percent of the eligible work force, 18-65, is the lowest in decades.

Look at the libs justify everything in order to make BO look good. What a bunch of drones you are.

Jack, I wonder if BO will ask for funds to help those gang members get more tattoos. Those are such cute children, aren't they?

BO is a fraud.

The should fly all of them back to central America. If Honduras can field a World Cup team, which involves a lot of expense, then they can the "children" back. What a joke.

Now libs are using the term "war refugees" to spin this.

There's also a substantial backlash from the "black community" over this.

BO is doing nothing at all to stop this, nothing. No action against Mexico, or any of those Central American countries.

Fairmon, With all due respect, You say, "(you) believe the lies out of D.C., I don't and follow the financials and the economy primarily through investment opportunities and news. What are a couple of those proposals blocked that would help heal the wound?"

List all the legislation supported by President Obama that has been voted on in the house. I venture to say it pales against the number of times the Reds tried to reverse ACA. We could start with immigration reform that passed in a bi-partisam vote in the Senate and has yet even to make it to the house floor but is "referred to several committees" by Bohner. I could list any number of judicial nominations. Today the Reds in the Senate threaten filibuster of changing the religious freedom law that would afford everyone access to medical care including contraceptives. Let's see how fast Bohner brings the ~$4B fund request to resolve the "children at the border" problem to the floor of the House, it contains everything Rick Perry asked for and nothing more. That is what I mean by reactive refusal to even consider a proposal, blind rejection rooted in absolute radical political bias. BTW, I read a wide variety of professional and lay publications and seldom listen to the talking heads for assessments of trends.

A good example of the reflexive "No" reaction is Z-fister's next-to-last last post where he proposes invading Mexico and Central American countries over the children immigrant problem. Exactly how is that going solve the problem? He also seems to suggest we should not bear any responsibility towards the children's welfare. If that is his choice, he has to live with it. I'm sure if his children found themselves in dire straights abandoned for any reason, he would hope for mercy and compassion for them.

Fairmon says, "'inqmid said... manufacturing is the USA is on a resurgence.'Are you saying the net new number of manufacturing jobs are increasing? "

I said it is little consolation for you and me but good for our kids, yes manufacturing is on the upswing in the USA. I did not make any statement about numbers of jobs immediately created or how fast.

This is not about President Obama. This is about an American democracy that is broken by the minority seeking to enforce its will on the majority. Throughout the history of this country literally from the development of the Constitution compromise has made it work, the Bill of Rights being a good example.

We've set back border defense 3000 years.

How long does it take to travel from the bottom of Mexico to the US border? A long time. Mexico is looking the other way. They have to allow these people into their country. They're usually strict as hell about their borders, but somehow 300,000 make it through there to here since April? This is orchestrated. Mexico or the our gov. didn't see this coming? LOL

This is exploitation, and it's spitting in the face of US citizens.

There's a video of a black woman from Texas blasting this mess, and telling it the way it is. Bo won't be impeached, but he deserves to be.

Irresponsible prick, metrosexual who's too chicken to go to the border because he might ruin his manicure or contract one of the many diseases floating around down there. He doesn't want to put himself in danger, but he doesn't care if citizens are.

You give far too much credit to modern technology. You offer this as if it were possible to know what every human being on the planet is up to, what they are driving, where they are at any given moment, etc.

It makes for a nice conspiracy theory, and God knows you've been reading Alex Jones crap, but you're still as dumb as a box of rocks.

"We've set back border defense 3000 years."

Are you even in a position to know what, if any security existed at the border 3,000 years ago?

You seem to want to blame him for doing nothing. What is it he is not doing to any country, south of the border, that he is not doing?

I think a little fact checking will show the rate of loss is less with an occasional uptick. The creation of decent paying jobs may prevent what appears to be the inevitable. Many initiatives could make a major difference however, both parties keep blocking them. Tax reform with business and corporate rates to 17% with zero manipulative deductions. The only way to avoid taxable profits should be spending the money on the business or reduce prices.

Energy offers a major opportunity for those willing to relocate and work but too many are blocking opportunities although the EPA and DOE both see no significant risk. Jobs and employment levels that force employers to bid up wages is what is needed.

The following apples and oranges comparison is an example of what politicians depend on having people think. Once the war ended the debt reduction began until we became the world's largest creditor. The gold standard was in place, there was little welfare with no borrowed or printed money in order to give it away.

Fairmon, Tax reform, capital gains tax reduction etc are all smoke screens. We enjoy one of the lower tax rates in the world and have one of the stronger (est?) economies. It does not take a rocket scientist to see that corporations are sitting on the largest amount of cash in recent history but are not hiring or using the capital constructively. Banks are in the same boat. There is nothing wrong with industry. The problem lies elsewhere. Overly conservative fear of the future.

I did not intend to get into an argument with you but manufacturing is increasing in the US and it is sector dependent. I doubt seriously any organization especially one bankrolled by the US is going to replace the US currency fro all the reason I mentioned previously, especially since there is no good alternative.

The President has proposed a way to increase border control increase rate of return of unauthorized immigrants and reduce flow of immigrants across the border, and even said if some governor asks for national guard he would entertain the request. He is definitely doing nothing. As he said, i have one trusted aide who has visited the border 7 times and keeps me regularly informed on the exact details daily, why do you think I need to do a photo-op that takes time from solving the problem?

I really doubt you seriously propose we go back to the gold standard. Money (and gold) is worth only what value people assign to it, e.g., widely varyingprice of gold, bitcoins, etc, , none of it has intrinsic value.

July 10, 2014 at 9:06 p.m.
inquiringmind said...

And of course when we were on the gold standard we never had depressions and periods of rapid inflation, and never had periods of high unemployment...Money only has extrinsic value and as long as that is the case its value will always be subjective. It is worth what someone is willing to pay for it in a barter arrangement.

Now, a real discussion of which I believe I am qualified to comment.

This is my reply to my father, a self-educated, economist, proven financial wizard and present world market investor, in regard to USD devaluation or relocation out of Mexico and South America (or any country) due to political and social instability (news of violence, drug cartels mafia type practices, political scandals/corruption, etc.)

Father,

It is an interesting article and a compelling argument with worldwide repercussions. This column demonstrates the volatility, imperceptibly real and sudden facility, for a country to become impoverished through apparent inconsequential market devaluation, similar to the discussions we have had with the present USA financial condition. However, this discussion is necessary for these depreciation figures easy hide themselves from discretionary spending or GNP. Although, this article mentions dollars, it is a fact, that net worth based on actual or immediate market significance, i.e., cash on hand, inventory, completed factory production, refined metals or based on worthless paper or coin (including gold) is unstable.

I have always believed that this present valuation of net worth is short sighted, incomplete and will only be corrected with an impending market collapse. Until regions are appreciated, for at least a portion of their for their inherent value, such as, temperate weather conditions, fresh water supply, ability to grow produce, natural minerals and resources, as well as, future earnings potential (manpower), etc., this type of valuation will always favor highly industrialized countries, much like Western Europe, which is armed with nothing but technology, leaving all in a precarious position.

Using present world doctrine, the only manner in which a regions’ intrinsic value can be capitalized is through the vision and persuasion of a savvy entrepreneur with access to substantial capital, marketing ability and, as always sheer luck with which to execute this project. Even then, all is investment until the product goes to market, e.g., Baja Mining. The only political and financial structures that presently recognize this untapped or undeveloped worth are labeled as communist or socialist.

Nevertheless, I believe we will and are beginning to see this market correction through changing global weather patterns, over-population and political and social conflict. None of which compel manufacturing production or economic profitability but by force, only promote survival, leaving only these regional resources. Although there is much talk and objection to this market correction or what has come to be described in today‚Äôs capitalism as ‚Äúredistribution of wealth,‚ÄĚ I feel that this "equalization" will happen naturally, thus, inevitably.
