Smith: Why legal immigration must be the priority

Robin Smith

A few years back, I encountered a group of folks in blue golf shirts with the logo of a security company walking in a Chattanooga neighborhood. I learned that the area had been victimized over a two-week period by “a rash of break-ins” by “bold” individuals in the daytime, even with homeowners present.

It was a profitable day for these sales folks in a part of Chattanooga that had been hit by individuals who had no respect for the property rights of others, who had no respect for the law, and who were comfortable in their acts against hard-working, law-abiding folks.

It could be argued by some that the criminals might feel justified in their thefts because they had an unmet need in their lives. But, the natural response of this neighborhood was to express anger, request a greater presence of law enforcement and implement personal security measures on their own.

We have locks on our doors at home, some have security alarm systems, others have motion-detection systems at home or business. Some may live in gated communities.

Sounds acceptable, right?

Now, apply this thinking to the border of the United States of America. It’s not racist to have a legal immigration process. It’s not hateful to enforce the laws of the nation. It’s not showing a lack of compassion to expect any individual who wants to live in this nation to enter legally first, then abide within the law.

The finger-pointing in the political world among the gutless wonders who are fearful to state the fact are not showing compassion. The citizens who own property, pay taxes and raise their families along the southern border of America are having their rights trampled upon and their lives disrupted by lawbreakers.

Tennessee has laws in place that prevent sanctuary cities that might harbor those here illegally. Our state has an e-verify system that employers must use to enforce the employment of legal citizens. Tennessee has already put in place legislation that prohibits taxpayer-funded services being available to illegal immigrants.

Why?

Because illegal immigration is … illegal.

When you lock your door at night, set the alarm system before lights out, drive through your gated community after work, are you racist? Are you hateful to want to protect your hard-earned possessions? Are you showing any less compassion that you honor your own property rights and good standing as a law-abiding citizen?

Frederick Bastiat, a 19th-century French theorist and political economist who wrote “The Law,” summarizes:

“The politician attempts to remedy the evil by increasing the very thing that caused the evil in the first place: legal plunder.”

“But how is this legal plunder to be identified? Quite simply. See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them and gives it to other persons to whom it does not belong. See if the law benefits one citizen at the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot do without committing a crime.”

“The mission of law is not to oppress persons and plunder them of their property, even though the law may be acting in a philanthropic spirit. Its mission is to protect property.”

It’s time for Americans to have the law protect them. Period.

Oh no, quoting another obscure French libertarian who objects to taxes. She sez, "...See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them and gives it to other persons..." Sounds an awful lot like Paul (Those who have much do not have too much, those who have little do not have too little" which is a follow on from the story of manna during the exodus.

Some one making$100K/yr who pays $20K in income tax so someone making $14K/yr can eat is oppression???

Liberals are liars, hypocrites and Socialists.

I love exposing them. It brings me great joy.

Most who comment on this site don't have any idea about what inquiringmind is saying.

I am going to explain Inquiringmind's latest.

Inquirinmind first tries to denigrate Frederick Bastiat by calling him "obscure" instead of trying to refute (inquirinmind can't) the truths he wrote.

He then goes and lies!

Ms. Smith quotes Frederick Bastiat but inquiringmind attributes his words to Ms. Smith -"She sez."

He then chops the quote of Frederick Bastiat "...See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them and gives it to other persons...", the rest of the quote was "to whom it does not belong"

He then has the audacity to say - "Sounds an awful lot like Paul (Those who have much do not have too much, those who have little do not have too little" which is a follow on from the story of manna during the exodus."

No!

Frederick Bastiat was speaking of paying mandatory taxes to government.

The Apostle Paul was speaking of collecting a voluntary offering from one group of Christians and delivering that voluntary offering to another group of Christians.

Inquirinmind then constructs a straw man - Some one making$100K/yr who pays $20K in income tax so someone making $14K/yr can eat is oppression???

Ms. Smith made no such claim!

Liberal are liars and socialist and constitute a voting majority on the city council, enough said. Theory proven by repeated outcomes.

oh no,con-man, the religious miscreant has found me and is embarrassing Christianity on this page!

I'm always amazed that con-man seems to be in control of "The Truth" (Remember the question, "What is truth?") Con-man should re-read read Exodus where the whole story began, but that would refute his claim.

Like many conservative Christians they latch onto verses attributed to Paul but never try to appreciate and understand Paul himself and exactly what and why he wrote, and that most of his writing is veiled Christian opposition to Rome. Paul was only concerned with life in the world and life in the Spirit.

And, Miz Smith choosing the world, exactly made HER point about repression by the state in taxing rich folks to help poor folks - that a government that takes from the rich to give to the poor is bad and inherently (knowing her religious background) anti-Christian. Hmmm. Guess she never read Samuel 8. I also would like to know if she endorses your ideas (Are you listening, Robin?).

"embarrassing Christianity" the language of coexist and the so called tolerance crowd. It is ok to pursue freedom as long as it matches their views.

A few points about your writings.

You most often make little or no sense.

You will not be direct because it would really reveal who you are and what you believe.

You like most all Liberals resort to name calling when you fail to fool others.

You could not refute Ms. Smith so you resorted to invention even to using the Bible to promote Godless Socialism.

I exposed you and I will expose you again when you pervert, distort, twist and lie.

Yes, con-man, damn that Godless socialism! I think it's the 11th and 12th commandments, isn't it - Thou shalt not feed, educate, or assist the poor in any way, and thou shalt not provide health care for the general populace. And any government that attempts to do so shall surely suffer for all eternity in the bowels of hell.

Yessir, the Koch brothers, being the quintessential greedy capitalists they are will no doubt be sitting at the right hand of your capitalist God and your capitalist Jesus in your capitalist heaven. I hope you have managed to save enough money to take with you to the afterlife. If God is the capitalist-loving deity you claim he is, he will probably be charging admission.

The only thing you "expose", ConMan, is yourself to other men.
