Golf Notes: Griffith, Vaughn, Javadi, Carter in women's city semifinals at Council Fire

Stroke-play leader Samantha Griffith won 6 and 5 in match play Tuesday in the Women's City tournament at Council Fire and will face Kathy Vaughn in the semifinals this morning.

Natalie Javadi and Linda Carter also will be trying to get to the championship-flight final Thursday. Vaughn also won 6 and 5, and Javadi won 5 and 4.

The other semifinals are, first flight, Carlene Ryon against Lynn McGee and Nancy Logue against Patty Donahoo; second flight, Cassandra Godbold against Lynn Heck and Lesley Dunn against Sharon Powell; and third flight, Pam Jones against Edwina Montgomery and Evelyn Williams against Brittany Marcum.

Susan Thurman took the first-day lead in the senior division with an 84.

Drive, Chip, Putt help

The Tennessee Golf Foundation is seeking volunteers to help with a July 26 qualifying tournament for the Drive, Chip & Putt national competition that concludes at Augusta National Golf Club.

The qualifier for ages 7-15 will be held at the First Tee of Chattanooga Player Development Complex beginning at 8:30 that Saturday morning, and about 200 participants are expected. Lunch, refreshments and an official ballcap will be provided to volunteers.

Area aces

Robert Adams of East Brainerd made a hole-in-one, his fifth, on July 6 at Brasstown Valley Resort at Young Harris, Ga. It was on No. 17, playing 167 yards, and he used a 6-iron. Zollie Mann and Russ Mang were witnesses.

Chris Carletti sank his first hole-in-one last Friday at Bear Trace at Harrison Bay. He used a 6-iron for the 170-yard shot on No. 4, as witnessed by Greg Guagenti.

Mac Hedges scored a hole-in-one at Signal Mountain. He aced No. 14 with a 9-iron from 133 yards with David Cats, Dave Lambeck and Bobby Morrison III as witnesses.

Creeks Bend yielded two aces in the last four days. Steve Lewis registered his sixth on Saturday with a 9-iron covering the 143 yards on No. 9, witnessed by Fred Mumm, Terry Johnston and Joe Hubbuch. Then Tuesday, Rick Wichman sank his ninth hole-in-one with a pitching wedge on No. 6, playing 106 yards. Jack Shipman, Jess Simmons and Rick Starnes saw that one.
