Emily Hangstefer of Signal Mountain and Laura Chapman of Columbus, Ga., won Friday in singles against Spain, making doubles unnecessary, to get the United States to today's championship match in the Maere Cup international women's competition for hearing-impaired tennis players. They are scheduled to play Chinese Taipei, which beat Great Britain, at 8 a.m. at the Champions Club but may have to move to Girls Preparatory School as they did Friday. Hangstefer's sister Katie is the U.S. women's captain. The USA with Daniel Hangstefer also is meeting Chinese Taipei in the men's Dresse Cup, but that is for a shot at fifth place; both had consolation byes.
Baseball
• Brian Doyle, who starred for the New York Yankees in the 1978 World Series, will be the featured speaker for one of the Rounding 3rd Ministries' "Sermons on the Mound" on the final morning of the Baseball Players Association World Series concluding this weekend in Hamilton County. Doyle is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. Sunday at Camp Jordan Park, where the older youth age groups are competing. He played from 1978 to 1981 with the Yankees and Oakland A's, and he batted .478 (7-for-16) with four runs and two RBIs while subbing for injured second baseman Willie Randolph in the 1978 Series triumph. He and his brothers Denny and Blake founded the famed Doyle Baseball School in 1978, and now Brian, a leukemia survivor, is executive vice president of Global Youth Baseball and helps with his son Kirk's Nextlvl Sports Institute. Kirk played for Lee University and is an Atlanta-based regional director for Rounding 3rd, which is run by Bartlee Norton and Aaron Franklin. Sermons on the Mound also are planned for Jim Frost Stadium and three spots at the Summit of Softball after those venues' first games Sunday morning, and anyone can attend.
• The Chattanooga Cyclones baseball tryouts scheduled for Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m. will go on no matter what -- at Cleveland State Community College or, in the case of bad weather, at Real Sports Academy in Ooltewah -- the organization announced Friday. Real Sports is on Mountain View Road about two miles north of Ooltewah High School. The tryouts are for ages 13-18 for the fall and 2015 Cyclones teams, and there is a tryout fee of $20.
