Land preservation gets commendation

The city of Soddy-Daisy recently announced the purchase of 285 acres in Big Soddy Creek Gulf, and commendations and congratulations are in order. First, thank you to the very generous Dr. and Ms. Quarfordt for preserving this scenic tract and for working with the city to price the land at a steep discount to its potential market value. Second, the board of commissioners and the mayor's office of Soddy-Daisy are to be commended for their vision and leadership in facilitating the purchase of this land. Speaking for many Soddy residents, I look forward to seeing Big Soddy Creek Gulf returned to the important recreational asset that our parents and grandparents once enjoyed.

Reread Constitution for true meaning

A letter to The Times recently stated that "a right is something that is enumerated in our Constitution ..." Not to engage in a debate on what they might be, I would remind the writer of the Ninth Amendment, which states simply, "The enumeration in the Constitution of certain rights shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people." He might also look at the Tenth Amendment.

Crangle gets nod for House 27 seat

Please accept my letter in support of Tommy Crangle, candidate for election to District 27 of the Tennessee state House of Representatives. Tommy is a man who enjoys a level of enviable integrity as clearly recognized by those who have known/observed him in an impressive professional engineering career, a seven-day-a-week Christian and a gentleman with a wonderful, caring concern for his fellow man. Being a registered Republican who chooses to think as an independent, my sincere concern is that I can be blessed with a solid faith-based representative who can be counted on to resist the many "favors" of the army of lobbyists who are so active around Legislative Plaza. They claimed the land for the spread of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Later King James proclaimed stated parces of land be dedicated entirely for Gospel Missions operations.

Christianity is what is responsible for the massive slaughter, torture, rape, and oppression of the indigenous peoples of America. It was the self-righteous attitudes of the European Christian explorers and early colonists that led them to feel called upon by God to brutalize and enslave entirely innocent people.

Ken Orr, if you think that your God sanctioned the extreme brutality and genocide dished out by the early Christian settlers upon the native Americans then you are one sick puppy and so is your God. You can take your evil dictator of a God and your disgusting self-righteous Christian attitude and stick it where the sun don't shine. With every breath that I take I will fight tooth and nail to keep this country from being the Christian theocracy that you and your perverted Christian ilk think it should be, and there are plenty more just like me who will not let you Christian fundamentalist wackos turn this country into a Christian theocracy. America was never intended to be a "Christian" nation, regardless of what some of the more puritanical early settlers might have wished it to be. Wouldn't it be wonderful to have her teaching in the Tennessee Valley area? She could easily blow that big-assed buckle off the Bible Belt of ignorance and superstition. Think of how many children could avoid a lifetime of Christian fundamentalist idiocy without need of imaginary gods and the accompanying huckster preachers, evangelists, and Jehovah-inspired cultists.

Just imagine all the Fundy-NutZ collapsing in a fit of religious apoplexy!

ayb...I'm so glad you took the time to check it out, and glad that you have found it/her to be enlightening. I go to that website often and always learn something. Have you also visited her personal website, www.truthbeknown.com? It contains all of the many books she has written on the subject of Christ as mythological character. Of all the writers who have written on the mythicism of JC and the nonsense of the Bible in general, she is one of my favorites.

I completely agree with you on wishing we could stem the tide of children falling prey to the insidious brainwashing of Christian fundamentalism. Instilling in young, fertile minds the notion of a literal hell and literal Satan is nothing less than child abuse. Of course, some have the common sense and intelligence to learn to eventually think for themselves, but there are still so many adult fundamentalists among us, pushing their agenda of Biblical literalism, that many never have the courage or the individual will to break out of the insular cocoon of blind faith that they were born into.

Mr. Orr, since when does the QUANTITIY of Bibles published have anything to do with the validation of its truth? I don't care if 6 TRILLION Bibles have been published, it's still a work of pure fiction, and nonsensical fiction at that. It really is a shame for anyone to reach adulthood still clinging to myths and fairy tales that any 14 yr.-old should have the common sense to realize are not literal or historical.
