NASCAR's Dillon brothers visiting Boyd's Speedway tonight - and more Chattanooga region sports news

NASCAR drivers Austin and Ty Dillon are scheduled to take part in the Schaeffer's Oil Southern Nationals Series for Super Late Model cars tonight in the Thunder Tuesday Night special event at Boyd's Speedway, where the grandsons of longtime NASCAR team owner Richard Childress also will sign autographs and drive lucky ticket holders on "Rides of a Lifetime." Austin won the Nationwide Series championship in 2013 and now is a Sprint Cup Series regular, and Ty held off Kyle Busch for his first Nationwide win this past Saturday at Indianapolis. The 35-lap Southern Nationals race will pay $3,500 to win. Crate Late Models and A- and B-Hobby races also are on tonight's schedule. Gates will open at 4 p.m. A regular racing schedule will resume Saturday night at Boyd's, and the rained-out USCS Sprint Cars and Mini Sprints races have been reset for Aug. 8.

• Fort Oglethorpe resident and truck driver Tony Helms won the Super Pro class and $1,500 Saturday night at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip. He won with a 4.97-second burst on a 4.96 dial in a dragster prepared by Mark Miles with a modified 555-cubic-inch Chevrolet engine using alcohol injection. Lee Powell of Rising Fawn was second with a 5.27 run on a 5.25 dial in his 1978 Pontiac Firebird. Curtis Snodgrass of Calhoun, Ga., won the Foot Brake class with a 5.96 run on a 5.95 dial in his classic 1965 Ford Falcon, and strip Hall of Famer L.C. Bigham of Tunnel Hill was second with an 8.57 on an 8.55 in a 1974 Dodge Dart. Jake Clayton of Ooltewah, the 2013 strip champion for junior dragsters, won that category with an 8.27 run on an 8.27 dial, with Mackenzie Bennett from Louisiana second at 7.97 on a 7.95. Cynthia Warnock continued her streak of top speeds and low elapsed times for the meet with a 150.25 mph, 4.59-second run.
