Chattanooga firefighters are responding to a gas leak on Central Avenue and have blocked the street, spokesman Bruce Garner said.

Six Chattanooga businesses had to be evacuated.

The leak is at E. 16th Street and Central Avenue, and the gas company is currently on-site and working to shut it off with jackhammers and backhoes.

"They're working on it right now," Garner said.

The leak was on a 2-inch gas line. Five fire companies responded.

Central Avenue is currently closed from Main Street to 18th Street.

There are no injuries reported and there was no fire at the scene.
