The Deserter

about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

Bringing home the last American POW from Afghanistan in exchange for 5 Gitmo detainees is a "bad decision"? Were you calling it a "bad decision" when Bush released 520 Gitmo detainees in exchange for NOTHING from 2007 to 2009? Now, all of the sudden, you think the release of these FIVE is going to come back to haunt us somehow?

How can anyone type such a thing then claim to be "pro-veteran"?

If he was your son/grandson/nephew/cousin/etc., would you think it was a bad decision?

You Right WingNut dipsh!ts can't have a thought outside what Fox News and Rush Limbaugh tell you to. They get mad, so you get mad. They say it was a "bad decision", so you parrot that crap. Your hate for President Obama is palpable. You people give the phrase "sore loser" a whole new meaning. You've been butthurt since 2008 and you can't help but show it.

And President Obama didn't break the law either. Educate yourselves:

Jack Goldsmith, a Bush administration veteran of the battles between the executive branch and Congress over Commander-in-Chief powers in the war against terrorists, says Obama may have been acting legally. On the website Lawfare Tuesday he wrote, “If the statute impinged on an exclusive presidential power, the president properly disregarded it and did not violate it.”

The wars on poverty, drugs, crime, illiteracy etc. are all being lost with the rate of loss increasing. Is it possible so many wars have been declared and the army (federal government) is too large to manage fighting them?

Is more confiscation of resources and wealth the answer? Would taking all the income from everyone and equally distributing it among everyone work? Should everyone be equally impoverished?

Is the creation of jobs at the lower end of the pay scale then increasing the minimum wage the answer or would creating more good paying jobs with a competitive and simple business tax system be a better alternative.

This is an article from Jim Wright, a retired US Navy Chief Warrant Officer. The utter disgust and contempt he feels towards those who suggest Sgt. Bergdahl should have been left behind is positively palpable in this piece. I didn’t think these people could dishonor the spirit of this country any more than they already had, but I was wrong. Oh, I get it. I understand that frightened people become more and more irrational, especially when they are allowed, encouraged, to feed incestuously on each other’s fear. And I get that they are afraid. I can see it in their faces; I can hear it in their voices. I get that they’re afraid of change. I get that they’re afraid of the future. I get that they’re afraid of the past. And I get that they’re afraid of the present. I get that they’re afraid of losing power and privilege and prestige. I get that they’re afraid of their capricious and childishly vengeful god. I get that they’re afraid of different races and different cultures and different accents and different religions and different sexual orientations and different viewpoints and different politics. I get it, they’ve screamed their small fears over and over and only a dead man could possibly miss it. I get that they are so consumed with rage and so filled with naked hate and so programmed with their diseased ideology that it poisons their minds like a computer chip submerged in acid.

Clay is right!

After 50 years and billions of dollars, we STILL need MORE of your money to fight this "war!" (which has no definable end-point or limits).

Pay no attention that the multitude of those in poverty have the highest of living standards relative to the WORLD, where our "poor" live better than ROYALTY of the past, and better than the mass impoverished of the present.

Walk into 95% of those considered "living in poverty" and you will find:

1) TVs (mostly big screens) 2) Cable/Direct TV 3) Running water 4) Electricity to heat and cool 5) Access to food -- be it through food subsidies or our effective charitable groups 6) Insurance -- Medicare for those on disability, over 65, and Medicaid to pay for most of the difference, and for those younger with children.

WHAT ELSE does someone who is "poor" need to have that JUSTIFIES the involuntary seizure of other people's property (money)?

How is this even debatable?

At what point is ENOUGH? Is there no limit to what these programs need?

Bottom line is for 95% of people, poverty is a mindset, developed over a LIFETIME, a set behavior patterns, much like the pattern of violence in the hood. Like violence, poverty is an outcome that mostly is dependent on non-prudent decisions -- what you see in propaganda pieces is the outcome of a lifetime of bad decisions. My question is why should I or anyone who sacrifices to succeed be FORCED to pay for someone who didn't?

Adversity MUST be overcome individually for there to be any resounding, permanent changes. Ain't no Road to Cibola that's going to solve inherent, internal, individual problems.

If you want more of something applaud and reward it. If you want less of something criticize and tax it.

Does our behavior suggest we want more since we:

o Reward single women that have a baby they can't support.

o Reward those that fail to attend school.

o Reward those that disrupt the schools and bully other kids.

o Reward people that refuse to take a job beneath their training.

o Enable those that prefer leisure & recreation over success.

o Reward those that are here illegally.

We must want less as we:

o Impose the highest corporate tax rate in the world on those doing business in our country.

o Criticize and tax success, accuse them of misbehavior.

o Reward those we like and punish those we don't like.

The principle of tax for less and reward for more appears to be working real well.

What a pathetic attempt to divert attention from that mess. LOL

Yeah, Clay, you're capable of taking everyone's attention away from Bergdahl.

"left behind" Hogwash. The guy deserted/abandoned his post/left his fellow soldiers behind. 6 soldiers died looking for a deserter. He left a note behind saying that he deserted. You libs are melting down because you can't make BO look good in this mess.

He's not a POW, he's a deserter. "detainees"? How about scum of the earth terrorists who were incarcerated. Detainee sounds like someone stuck in airport because of cancelled flights. Boy, you libs love your terminology.

I see many instances around town where children are raised in homes receiving government assistance. The children develop the same attitude toward earning a living as their parents show. Why go out and work when you can sit at home and get a check every month? There is zero motivation, and it continues through generations. I know someone that worked for the state several years ago that would help secure funding for individuals that wanted education/training for a job, but then had to secure a job for an amount of time as a condition of the funding. Many people turned it down, because the paycheck would mean they would lose their government check. They made a conscious choice to turn down earning a living so that they could keep holding their hand out, knowing the government would give them something. I don't care what "side" your on in politics, you have to admit there is something wrong with that.

Jonathan Turley: Barack Obama is really the president Richard Nixon always wanted to be.

Jonathan Turley (a professor of law at The George Washington University Law School), from wilkepedia: Professor Turley is widely regarded as a champion of the rule of law, and his stated positions in many cases and his self-proclaimed "socially liberal agenda", have led liberal and progressive thinkers to also consider him a champion for their causes, especially on issues such as separation of church and state, environmental law, civil rights, and the illegality of torture. Politico has referred to Turley as a "liberal law professor and longtime civil libertarian". Turley has nevertheless exhibited his disagreement with rigid ideological stances in contradiction to the established law with other stated and published opinions.

The mess media evening news just made the point that Bergdahl may not be a deserter because a soldier has to be AWOL for thirty days before he can be classified a deserter. He was supposedly captured soon after going AWOL.

Now, that was the case when I was in the Army during the Vietnam era. I typed the Morning Report which went to Department of the Army for my company. I recall reporting a couple of soldiers as deserters on the 30th day after having reporting them as AWOL for 29 days.

The Army will probably have to prove desertion was his intent from the get go to make that charge stick.

The mess media were probably helping Owebama out by bringing that definition of desertion out.

June 4, 2014 at 7:06 p.m.

Yeah, the "mess media" is part of the BO administration.

The guy left a note saying he was deserting. He's no hero and he turned his back on his unit. I can see why BO would consider him a hero because the deserter has blasted the US. I bet BO got some real satisfaction, an in-your-face kind of satisfaction calling him a hero on the WH lawn, and having his taliban wannabe dad make a speech in arabic. The whole thing makes me ill.

The fact remains BO "traded" this deserter for 5 maniacs who have killed Americans, and will kill more in the future. Despite what BO said about that this happens at "the end of a war", this war will never end as long as extremist Islam exists, which it has since 5000 a.d.

Many libs claimed on here that the maniacs released are really nothing. The hell they're not, they're murderers and can't wait to get back to murdering.

I strongly feel that Obwano will keep releasing prisoners from Gitmo until they're all gone. No matter how dangerous they are..which goes without saying.

Obwano has not only endangered the soldiers still in Afghanistan, but he's endangering US citizens as well by freeing terrorists who have made it their mission to kill Americans. He's a traitor, and lawless and should be impeached. Of course he wont' be because he's half black.

The Real Reason the U.S. Didn’t Rescue Bowe Bergdahl

After a second escape attempt, the American hostage was being moved so often, American commandos would’ve had to raid a dozen safehouses in Pakistan at once ........... In his first escape, Afghan sources said he avoided capture for three days and two nights before searches finally found him, exhausted and hiding in a shallow trench he had dug with his own hands and covered with leaves.

In his second bid for freedom, which has not been previously reported, Bergdahl made it to a remote village in the mountainous part of Pakistan, the former Afghan official said. The villagers simply returned him to his captors in the Haqqani Network. The U.S. officials were not familiar with details of the second escape attempt.

They don't deserve the same rights as citizens of this country do. Citizens who pay taxes, are responsible, obey the laws and enjoy the freedoms our Constitution gives them. Just like illegal aliens don't deserve to be treated as citizens because they're not.

It's simply a really bad idea to release 5 Taliban top terrorists, period. Even if Bergdahl wasn't a deserter, it's a bad idea. You don't leave a soldier behind, but you certainly don't release devils like that who will immediately turn around and kill more U.S. soldiers. Despite what Odumbo said about the "end of a war" this war will never end because Islamic Terrorists will never stop.

Fister keeps shouting GOP talking points. Maybe he has a little of his own insight to share? Reagan trades 1500 missles to the Iranians for the release of hostages, but that is acceptable? Fister, what do you think Iran did with those missles, paint them up with pretty colors and let the kids play on them? Many GOP leaders were kosher with the exchange, that is, until the exchange actually took place. Like I said yesterday, you guys would be crying and whining if Obama would have said, "We are going to let Sgt. Bergdahl remain in captivity and do nothing". You guys are laughable. You are only outraged because the GOP tells you to be outraged. You guys are a joke.

It's what distinguishes the US from dictatorships and other countries with limited human rights. That's what those troops are over there fighting. I would think champions of the Constitution such as yourself and Fister would agree. Or are you two just unadulterated supporters when it comes to the 2nd Amendment?

This is an easy one. The so-called "war on poverty" has already been lost. It created a permanent underclass on the public dole that the democrats use to buy votes. If this class came out of poverty, the Democrats would be perpetual losers.

If you are smart and work hard, anyone can still make it in the US, in spite of the obstacles that idiots like Obama and some other democrats put in your way. If you want to take advantage of the system and live on the public dole, the democrats have made that possible too.

As far as trading dangerous terrorists for a deserter, it looks like a typical Obama deal. One step forward, two steps back...it never ceases to amaze me what a dumb ass he really is. Don't take Obama with you to buy a car.....you'll end up paying $50,000 for a 1986 Comet.

I never said "people don't have a right to question Bergdahl's motives". There are two things I don't agree with in this ordeal: 1. He should not have had to remain in captivity. If he is a deserter or not, I think it was proper to broker a deal for his release. It was never going to be a "fair trade". History shows it never is. 2. Obama's actions were not "unprecedented". Again, history shows similar moves by former presidents. Now, if he is found to be a deserter or an aid to the Taliban, I believe the Army will hold the Sgt. accountable. And maybe the left was a bit misguided for singing his praises. But that doesn't excuse some of the right's behavior. Commentators have attacked Bergdahl's dad for having a long beard. I guess if he was a Christian attacking gays and made duck calls for a living, having a long beard is okay?

GaussianInterger.....Actually history is mixed on prisoner exchanges and they were always between states and not with terrorists. In the Civil war both sides exchanged prisoners until about 1864. US Grant then decided that since he had the population advantage that exchanging prisoners only prolonged the South's ability to fight the war. It was stopped and the war ended a short time later. Also, it didn't happen in WWII until the war ended.

What bothers most people is that 5 dangerous terrorists were traded for one deserter. That Obama broke the law again...by not advising congress. The guy is inept, incompetent, and has no experience for the job. Come on, he is a grad student.

June 5, 2014 at 11:34 a.m.

Gauss you're failing. You keep trying to divert the issue. The facts today are that Obatguano let loose on the world 5 terrorist devils who WILL kill American soldiers and possibly US citizens. Those aren't 'talking points', those are facts. The fact is that Bergdahl is a deserter. But Obatquano doesn't have to worry because the media is on his side.

Obatguano will do what he wants because he knows no one has the balls to stop him. He is a dictator, or a "rogue president". He broke the law, plain as day.

He's endangered every US citizen by releasing those 5 Taliban devils. Not only should he be impeached, he should be held accountable for any deaths that may occur at the hands of those 5.

In addition name one positive thing about negotiating with the Taliban/terrorists?

Name one positive thing about legitimizing the Taliban, which also contain a good deal of Al Qaida, considering they're not a soveriegn state.

Name one positive thing about setting that kind of precedent?

How does it make us safer?

June 5, 2014 at 4:35 p.m.

He's not a POW and is not listed as one. He's a deserter. Putting down questions asked doesn't give you any credibility. The Taliban is emboldened now to do more of this. How do I know? They said so today. They're "inspired". Here's what I think will happen, they'll make an effort to kidnap soldiers or citizens and demand more terrorists in return. Why wouldn't they? What's to stop them.

Obatguano is exactly what libs critized Nixon of being a long time ago, an imperial president.

My question is still not answered. Name one positive thing that will come from letting loose those 5 terrorists?

"You want something to happen". You're so dense that you don't even realize it already is happening. As soon as they were let loose it begins. These are not just regular folks, they're top terrorists.

Okay, genius how do you explain the Washington Post's report that the GOP was negotiating with the White House in 2011 a trade of Gitmo detainees for Bergdahl? You can't. You Republicans definitely suffer from a case of short term memory loss. If it doesn't have Benghazi, IRS, or Fast and Furious in it, you guys act like absent-minded doofusses. Plenty of GOP leaders were recently speaking to the WH about brokering a deal for Bergdahl's return. How do you explain that Fister? This deal didn't come out of left field.

As far as letting "loose those 5 terrorists" goes. I answered that. The GOP labeled Bergdahl a POW, not me. In case you haven't been informed, the Afghan war will soon be over. Those 5 terrorists (which have not been formally charged and tried since being captured in 2002) would have to be release or tried, along with the other detainees in Gitmo. They have to remain captive in Qatar for one year as terms of their release. How effective is a low-level Taliban commander going to be considering it will be almost 13 years since they were captured? Will the Taliban trust them?

Sh!t man, do you have anything relevant to bring to the conversation? Is there anything left for me to debunk?
