Retired Rear Admiral Vance Fry, SC USNR and retired Rear Admiral Noah Long USNR are supporting Republican Tommy Crangle in his campaign to succeed state House Rep. Richard Floyd.
Floyd, who is retiring, has endorsed Crangle as well.
"Tommy Crangle brings a wealth of business management experience to the table. ... I have known Tommy for 10 years and I know he is a dedicated Christian and demonstrates character and integrity in all business and personal actions," Fry said in a statement.
Long said Crangle "has an inquisitive mind and a desire to dig into the details and solve problems."
Both men are urging area veterans to support Crangle.
He faces Republican Patsy Hazlewood in the Aug. 7 state Republican primary. The winner will face Eric McCroy in November for the Tennessee District 27 seat.
Hazlewood backs prescription plan
Republican candidate for Tennessee House District 27, Patsy Hazlewood, said she supports the seven-point plan to reduce prescription opioid abuse, announced by Gov. Bill Haslam, the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services and the Department of Health.
"With Hamilton County listed among the state's 'top' counties for the number of pain clinics and number of babies born each year dependent upon narcotics, our citizens will be well-served by this initiative to reduce the availability of powerful narcotic pain medications to those choosing to abuse and re-sell them," Hazlewood said in a news release. "Illegal and illicit drug use harms families, harms employees, and burdens an already stretched health care system."
The main tenants of the proposal include using educational activity, law enforcement, regulatory oversight and treatment availability through the medical community to see reductions in the number of Tennesseans abusing controlled substances and incurring the unintended consequences noted by accidental overdose and newborn dependency, the news release stated.
Turner holds reception
A reception for Republican Sabrena Turner, who is seeking the Hamilton County Commission District 7 seat, will be held Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Heritage House in Heritage Park, at 1428 Jenkins Road.
Turner, owner and lead broker at Sabrena Realty Associates in East Brainerd, is a graduate of Ooltewah High School and Bryan College.
She faces Democrat Ezra Maize in the Aug. 7 election.
Judge Sell gets FOP support
The Fraternal Order of Police Rock City Lodge No. 22 has endorsed Judge Christie Sell for Hamilton County General Sessions Court Judge, Division 1, according to a news release. The local Rock City chapter includes officers and deputies from every police department in Hamilton County.
"Judge Sell is an effective community leader, diligently serving Hamilton County both on and off the bench," said Sean O'Brien, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Rock City Lodge. "Her fairness and competence are apparent to law enforcement, and we look forward to continually working together in the Hamilton County community."
Judge Christie Sell was elected General Sessions Court judge in 2006, the first woman to be elected to that position.
She faces Rex Sparks in the Aug. 7 election.
Whitfield GOP hosts forum
The Whitfield County Republican Party will meet Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Mack Gaston Community Center, 218 N. Fredrick St. in Dalton, when the two remaining Republican candidates for Whitfield County commissioner, District 1, have been invited to participate in a forum discussion that will include opening remarks and a question-and-answer session. Renee Davis and Barry Robins have been invited.
The runoff election is July 22.

Democratic events slated
The Hamilton County Democratic Party will have a booth at the Bessie Smith Strut outside the Bessie Smith Cultural Center where members will distribute free hand fans during the blues and barbecue street party.
On Tuesday, the Greater Democratic Women's Club will hold its monthly meeting at the IBEW Union Hall, 3922 Volunteer Drive, at 6 p.m.
