5-at-10: Soccer hopes, Vandy's title, draft contest and the best non-steroids baseball player of this era

Thursday, June 26, 2014

Big day. The draft. The World Cup. Vanderbilt awoke as a national champion in a men's sport.

We're dealing with a lot of stuff. (Candlesticks always make a nice gift; maybe find out where they are registered... Let's get two.)

From the "Talks too much" studios, consider the outcome before coming out of the considerations.

War Vandy

For the first time in its history, Vandy is the national champion in a men's sport.

Congrats, and it's well-deserved considering the baseball powerhouse Tim Corbin and company have built in Nashville.

World Cup

Here's a nice little aid if you need it to watch the U.S. World Cup match today. It's a note from Jurgan, Jurgan, Jurgan Klinsmann excusing you from work to watch the match. Heck, if your boss buys that, tell them the 5-at-10 said you could take the rest of the day.

Enjoy a Co-Cola for us and give us a shout on the radio show. Deal? Deal.

That said, Noah-like floods are wreaking havoc on the World Cup venues. Whether they get the game in is in question at the moment.

For us to continue this joyful soccer ride, the U.S. has to advance. Period. If the U.S. is left in the group stage, our World Cup interest fades like a pour tee shot.

So here's the scenarios:

U.S. beats Germany today, they win the group and advance;

U.S. ties Germany today, they advance as the No. 2 seed;

If Portugal and Ghana tie today, the U.S. advances;

If U.S. loses to Germany and Ghana-Portugal does not end in a tie, the tie-breaker will be goal differential. Right now the U.S. is +1, Ghana is -1 and Portugal is -4.

Here's a very basic soccer breakdown for you: Score early. Kick it hard. Don't use your hands.

Questions?

Draft and NBA intrigue

Remember our draft contest (first pick, Lakers' first pick, where does Jarnell Stokes go and who has the best suit) for a chance to win a couple Man Xpo tickets this weekend.

As for the actual draft, we are intrigued by the periphery stuff tonight as much as the actual draft, which is saying something considering this arguably the deepest draft in a decade.

The surrounding pieces include which teams will try to move pieces and dump salary to create room for any of the superstars who have or could opt out of their contracts before Monday.

The surrounding pieces include some of ESPN's best voices - hi Jay Bilas - analyzing and breaking down the players and picks.

The surrounding pieces definitely include the suits - here's some of the worst, highlighted by the box suit Drew Gooden donned in 2002.

This and that

photo Atlanta Braves pitcher Alex Wood delivers to the Cleveland Indians during the first inning of a baseball game at Turner Field in Atlanta.

- Alex Wood was razor sharp in seven innings Wednesday as the Braves beat the Houston Astros 4-0. (EDIT) Justin - not Stinky - Upton hit a long homer, so there's that, and Freddie Freeman missed his first innings of the season after being hit with a pitch in the eighth.

- We are scheduled to have Atlanta Hawks head coach Mike Budenholzer today at 3:15 on Press Row. We're excited to chat with Mike about a slew of things, including his background with the Spurs and Gregg Popovich, the Hawks plan with the No. 15 pick and what LeBron James could mean. Listen in at 105.1 FM or right here at timesfreepress.com.

- Tim Lincecum joined some elite company Wednesday, becoming one of four guys with multiple Cy Youngs and multiple no-hitters. He joined Sandy Koufax, Randy Johnson and Roy Halladay after throwing his second no-no at the Padres. WE don't think Lincecum will be a Hall of Famer, but he does have a boss little mustache.

- Georgia and Notre Dame have agreed to play football against each other in 2017 and 2019. We're OK with that.

Today's question

Remember the mailbag and to send us your draft entries.

As for today's question, well here are but two:

What is your expectation of Tiger today? Over/under 72, whatcha got?

Derek Jeter turned 40 today. Who's the best baseball not linked to steroids of this generation?

Finally, predictions/reactions from US-Germany? Go, and the conversation will continue on all of these and more on Press Row.
