Members of the Hyksos Temple No. 123 recently presented Reuben Strickland Memorial Scholarships to six high school students.
Recipients were Rozario Slack, Grace Baptist Academy; Wilbert Wheeler, Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences; Cordarius Talley, East Ridge High School; Kelcie Hyter, Howard High School; Derrick Gladden, Tyner Academy; and Victoria Williams, Central High School.
Franklin to receive History Makers Award
The Chattanooga History Center has announced that its ninth annual History Makers Award will honor John P. Franklin Sr.
The award recognizes local individuals or groups who have made significant contributions to Chattanooga, the region, state or country. The award will be presented at a luncheon on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at the Chattanooga Convention Center.
Franklin has been one of Chattanooga's education, business and political leaders for more than 60 years. He was principal at William J. Davenport Elementary School and the first principal of Alton Park Junior High School, which was later renamed in his honor.
He was elected Chattanooga commissioner of education and health in 1970, and then vice mayor of Chattanooga, where he served for 14 years. While a politician, he helped turn the tide against the city's exclusion of blacks from political office, which dated to the Jim Crow-inspired laws of 1910, according to a History Center news release.

Georgia Northwestern sends 10 to nationals
Georgia Northwestern Technical College sent 10 of its top students to compete against the nation's largest colleges and universities in the National Phi Beta Lambda Conference in Nashville, which concludes tonight.
More than 1,800 college students will show their talent as future business leaders and compete for an opportunity to win nearly $80,000 in cash prizes.
Qualifying for the national round from Georgia Northwestern are Jonathan Hammond and Ernesto Martinez (Help Desk), Marcella Hooper (Future Business Educator), Mario Trejo (Justice Administration), Marcos Diaz (Statistical Analysis), Sairon Patton and Kenneth Shuman (Marketing Analysis and Decision Making), Kenneth Shuman (Small Business Management Plan), Cynthia Mills and Daniel Heiman (Small Business Management Plan), and Tina Zhang (Accounting Principles).
Archer Daniels makes donation to McDonald charities
Archer Daniels Midland Co. recently donated $10,000 to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Chattanooga Inc. The donation will go toward upgrading the house's security systems and keyless entry program, which enables families of critically ill children to visit their child in the hospital any hour of the day or night.
"The Chattanooga Ronald McDonald House primarily serves families of children in intensive care, and it is very important for families to be able to be at the child's bedside at a moment's notice when the child wants them or when vital medical decisions must be made with physicians. Having a state-of-the-art security system and a keyless entry program makes it possible for families to be confident in their safety at the Ronald McDonald House and gives the staff the ability to manage access for current residents," said Jane Kaylor, chief executive officer of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Chattanooga.
RMHC of Greater Chattanooga provides a "home away from home" each year for about 600 families of seriously ill children receiving treatment at hospitals in Chattanooga. The cornerstone programs are the 26-bedroom Ronald McDonald House, a Ronald McDonald Family Room located inside T.C. Thompson Children's Hospital at Erlanger, and the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile.
Phi Kappa Phi inductees announced
Two area residents were initiated into collegiate chapters of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest college honor society for all academic disciplines.
They are Charles Norrod of Crossville, Tenn., initiated at Middle Tennessee State University, and Larry Mendizabal of Ooltewah, initiated at Andrews University.
Foundation awards Locher scholarships
The MaryEllen Locher Foundation recently awarded 39 college scholarships totaling $64,000 to high school and college students.
Recipients are either children who have lost a parent to breast cancer or have a parent who is a breast cancer survivor. The awards are designed to ease the financial and emotional stress of families dealing with the disease.
Recipients are William Alderman, Savannah Bennett, Emily Bishop, Amanda Boozer, Kamry Cardin, Ryan Claxton, Copeland Cobb, Allie Cody, Kellie Day, Kayley Denton, Johanna Gartman and Sarah Kate Gartman.
Also, Caroline Hamilton, Lauren Hood, Jasmine Johnson, Hannah Kelly, Jonas Kelly, Nathan Kelly, Stephanie Lackey, Katie McDowell, Zach McKelvey, Sarah Moore, Taylor Mullinax, Alex Mullin and Grayson Mullin.
