Cash in doubles final in St. Petersburg and other sports news

Manker Patten Tennis Club professional Wesley Cash cramped up in the third set and lost in the men's 55 singles semifinals Saturday in the Raymond James Super Senior Grand Prix tournament at the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Country Club, but he and Mark Vines of Lynchburg, Fla., won their doubles semifinal 6-4, 6-4 over the Atlanta-area duo of Keith Banister and Tom Smith. Cash passed up the third-place singles match after falling 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 to Orlando's Stuart Saiki, who trailed 4-1 in the third set.

Swimming/Diving

• As he did two days earlier in the 500-yard freestyle, University of Michigan senior and former McCallie School standout Sean Ryan from Hixson finished fifth Saturday in the men's 1650 freestyle event in the Big Ten Conference swimming meet in Michigan's pool. With teammates finishing first and third, Ryan was part of a 50-point Wolverines event with his 14:58.27 time.

• Kansas senior Alison Lusk from Baylor School finished fifth in the women's 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes at the Big 12 Conference swim meet at Austin, Texas. She had a career-best time of 1:02.26 in the 100 Friday night and a 2:14.51 Saturday in the 200.

• Natalie Smallen and Kilie Wilson from the Baylor Diving Club finished fourth and sixth in 11-under girls' 3-meter competition Friday, and Wilson was third with Smallen seventh in 1-meter Saturday in the Spring Junior Olympic Region 3 USA Diving Championships at Oakton, Va. Top-six finishers qualified for the East Nationals in April in Largo, Fla. Both are area fourth-graders.

Auto Racing

• Rock Spring, Ga., resident Tyler Caheely earned a headline in the National Hot Rod Association publication with his Southeast Division season-opening Super Stock win last week at the Orlando (Fla.) Speed World Dragway. Caheely won with a 10.22-second burst on a 10.18 dial in his 1968 Chevrolet Camaro in the final elimination against past Division 2 champion Mike Crutchfield. The son of former NHRA world champion Eddie Caheely knocked off two guys with multiple world titles, David Rampy and Scotty Richardson, on the way to the final. The younger Caheely, who has raced frequently at the Brainerd Optimist strip, was a runner-up at the 2013 season finale in Reynolds, Ga.

Lacrosse

• Ellie Murphy had four goals and four assists and Sally Anne Greenwood scored three of Sewanee's first four goals in a 22-9 Southern Athletic Association lacrosse win Friday against visiting Hendrix. Katie Riddle had three goals and three assists and Brita Brudvig, Wittney Reed, Ella Richardson and Mallory Grimm added two goals each for the Tigers (4-1, 2-0), who outshot Hendrix 41-14.
