Courter: Things I wish my kids would ask me

Editor's note: Barry Courter has a 24-year-old son who is a college graduate and a 19-year-old daughter who is a sophomore in college.

Q: Dad, what are some things to know about renting a house versus renting an apartment?

A: It is different because an apartment complex usually has an entire staff to handle things such as billing, utilities and maintenance, so it can be easier. With a house, very often you are responsible for everything, including maintenance inside and outside the house. You need to ask about that before you sign anything. You also will need to get the utilities turned on in your name, and you should schedule that for the day you move in.
