Four collegians named to academic team
Two students from Cleveland State Community College and two from Chattanooga State Community College are among 26 of the state's highest-achieving community college students, named to the 2014 Phi Theta Kappa All-Tennessee Academic Team sponsored by USA Today.
Rachel Ann Burgess and Mark Partain from Cleveland State and Derek Dameron and Robert Barber from Chattanooga State were presented medallions at a ceremony held at the Doubletree Downtown Hotel in Nashville.
The All-Tennessee Academic Team consists of students nominated by their colleges, who will be considered for the All-USA Academic Team sponsored by USA Today and Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. Each two-year college in a state may nominate two outstanding students selected in recognition of their academic achievement, leadership and service to the community.
Clinic staff honors Caldwell
The staff of Chattanooga Tumor Clinic Inc. held a reception recently honoring local attorney Thomas A. Caldwell in appreciation for his volunteer service to the nonprofit.
From 1965 to 2011, Caldwell volunteered as a board member and offered his legal services free of charge to the nonprofit, which provides care to cancer patients in the Chattanooga area.
The reception was attended by family, fellow board members, volunteer physicians and others who worked with Caldwell in conjunction with the Chattanooga Tumor Clinic Inc.
Aulich earns Eagle Scout rank
Cory Aulich, a sophomore at Soddy-Daisy High School, achieved Eagle Scout rank during a Court of Honor held recently at Grace United Methodist Church. Cory,the son of Larry and Tammy Aulich, is a member of Troop 219.
At school, he is vice president of the Student Government Association, student director for the school play and runs cross country. In Scouts, he has been an Order of the Arrow troop representative and participated in various service projects, including summer work camp. He is a member of Clear Creek Church of Christ.
For the community service project required of every Eagle Scout, he led a team that built 10 benches for football, lacrosse and other sports teams. Eight benches were placed at the activity field near Clear Creek Church of Christ and two were installed at Middle Valley Recreation Complex.
TWC students awarded scholarships
Tennessee Wesleyan College has awarded scholarships to students in the Business Administration Department's Management Excellence program. Sally Landon, Dana Hammontree, Charity King, Marc Daniels, Christy Hughes, Samantha Bild, Katelyn Hodges and Stephanie Malone each received $1,000 from the proceeds of the Merck Neighbor of Choice Program.
The program's goal is to improve the quality of life of people in communities in which Merck resides and operates. It is coordinated through the Merck Foundation and its Office of Corporate Philanthropy.
The Athens, Tenn., college was awarded $20,000 from Merck, money used to buy a set of 10 laptops and outfit them with software for use by qualified Management Excellence students. The remaining $15,000 will be awarded in scholarships to students in the program.
The Management Excellence program at Tennessee Wesleyan is designed specifically for nontraditional students who want to complete their bachelor of science degree.
