Heavyweight Peck gives UTC five in nationals and other sports news

Freshman heavyweight Dawson Peck has been added to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's contingent participating in the NCAA Division I wrestling tournament next week. The NCAA notified coach Heath Eslinger Wednesday afternoon of Peck's inclusion. The Mocs also will be represented by three Southern Conference champions -- Nick Soto (133 pounds), Corey Mock (165) and Levi Clemons (174) -- and SoCon runner-up Alex Hudson (157). Peck, who went through the SoCon season undefeated, finished fourth in the conference tournament but has a 12-3 record with two victories over ranked opponents.

Basketball

• Carson-Newman's Ish Sanders from Cleveland was picked to the DAKTRONICS men's basketball all-region second team for 2013-14. He's averaging 20 points and 3.2 made 3-pointers a game going into Saturday's NCAA Division II tournament opener against Lincoln Memorial. He has made 90.9 percent of his free throws.

Baseball

• Derrick Pitts went 7-for-8 with a home run, four doubles, five runs scored and seven batted in as Lee University beat visiting Purdue Calumet 19-3 and 7-0 in baseball Thursday. He was 4-for-5 with the homer, two doubles, three runs and six RBIs in game one, when Zacary Hawkins and Cameron Brewster drove in four and three runs with their two hits each and Blake Ray hit a two-run homer for the Flames (16-7). Brewster homered as well, Jordan Stewart was 2-for-2 and scored twice, and starting pitcher Ryan Zimmer allowed five hits and one run in his five innings. Ray was 2-for-3 and matched Hawkins and Brewster with two RBIs each in game two, when C.J. Lusted and Lucas Barnett combined on a four-hitter with 12 strikeouts.

Softball

• Covenant College and Sewanee moved their softball doubleheader up a day to Thursday, and each got a win out of it. Sewanee rallied to win the first game 12-11 in eight innings, but visiting Covenant (6-10) won 23-6 in game two as Morgan Lane went 5-for-6 with four runs and two RBIs and Jordan Brett and Madison Quirk got four and three RBIs with three hits each. Lane tied Lauren Johns' two-day program record with seven RBIs in the first game, including a grand slam, and Johns matched her in going 3-for-5 while Chandler Shepherd scored three runs in the Lady Scots' loss. Sarah Fleming and Sara Burklin each was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Tori Haugvoll and Courtney Saunders each had two hits and two runs for Sewanee in game one, when Saunders hit the tying hit that led to the winning run on an error. Haugvoll, Fleming and Grace Cobbs each had two hits and Haugvoll and Saunders had two RBIs apiece in game two for the Tigers (1-9), while Kendall Whann, Kaitlyn Sirmons and Shepherd were other three-hit Covenant players.

• Cleveland State won 4-3 and lost 14-0 in softball Thursday against visiting Snead State. Kristen Qualls and Amber Swaney had RBI singles in a four-run first inning for the Lady Cougars, and Emily Huston was 2-for-4 while Ida Watson pitched a five-hitter with only one earned run. Snead's Christian Rhodes pitched a one-hitter as her team got 18 hits in the rematch.

Lacrosse

• Wooster edged Sewanee 11-9 in men's lacrosse Wednesday night, despite three goals and an assist by Michael Morris and two goals by Hayden Byrd. Tommy Healy made 13 saves in defeat for the Tigers (3-2). Wooster is 4-0.
