Cougars win series finale

Designated hitter Jake Wright was 4-for-5 with two doubles, Wright Hackett drove in three runs and Evan Speicher homered as Cleveland State won the final game of its weekend TCCAA baseball series at Volunteer State with an 8-5 victory Saturday.

The Cougars (13-12) scored three runs in the second and eighth innings and survived a four-run ninth for the Pioneers (13-12), who had rallied for two wins against them Friday. Josh Morgan got the pitching win with six innings, allowing four hits and one unearned run.

Zack Janes was 2-for-4 with an RBI and matched Chris Caffrey with two runs for Cleveland State.

* Walters State 12, Chattanooga State 1: At Morristown, the nationally 10th-ranked Senators finished off a three-game weekend TCCAA sweep as Elijah Sutherland, Brycen Roberts and Jake Farr each had two hits and three RBIs, Farr with a homer. Jay Rhoten and Brandon Day had the two hits for the Tigers (13-9, 6-6) off Aaron Quillen, and Andy Clay had the RBI. Walters is 22-7, 11-1.

* Lee 5-1, Tiffin 0-0: At Cleveland, Dustin Lawson and Jeremy Bales combined on a four-hitter and slugger Derrick Pitts through the first five innings of a two-hitter with Grayson Bailey and Kyle Briner as the Flames improved to 19-7.

Josh Silver's first-inning run held up for the difference in the series finale, when Lee got six hits. Jordan Stewart and Siosi Poti each was 2-for-3 in game one, with three RBIs and one. Cameron Brewster tripled in the other run.

* St. Andrews 14-7, Bryan 6-6: At Laurinburg, N.C., the hosts swept the Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader with Michael Durig matching Bryan's Justin Morhardt's two hits with a home run and four RBIs in game two. Also in that game for Bryan (16-12, 6-3), Grant Zawadzki and Tyler Latham each had two hits and an RBI and Kevin Roberts scored three runs.

Zawadzki, Roberts, Cody Rhinehart and Preston King each had two hits in the first game, King driving in two runs and the other three one each. Tyler Radcliff was 3-for-4 with two doubles, five RBIs and three runs in St. Andrews' first win.

* Covenant 11-8, Piedmont 8-3: At Lookout Mountain, the host Scots completed a weekend USA South sweep with Will Cleland going 7-for-10 with three RBIs. He had a program-record three triples among his four hits in the first game, when catcher Forrest Hunter was 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs and Perry Rigby and Will Carlton each had two hits and two RBIs, Rigby with a homer and a double.

In game two, Scott Gillespie was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and K.C. Simons was 2-for-4 with two runs for Covenant (9-5, 6-3). Keith Grabowski was 5-for-9 with a triple, a double and two RBIs for the day for Piedmont (12-6, 5-4).
