UTC splits at Appalachian

Host Appalachian State and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga took turns winning 4-1 in their opening Southern Conference softball games Saturday in Boone, N.C. They'll decide the series with a single game today.

Katie Henderson (6-4) got the pitching win for UTC with a nine-strikeout five-hitter in the second game, when the Lady Mocs (14-12, 1-1) overcame a 1-0 deficit with two runs each in the fourth and seventh innings. Alyssa Taylor was 2-for-4 with an RBI double, Criket Blanco was 2-for-3 and scored a run and Kaiti Dutton hit a seventh-inning homer.

Tyler Templet got the tying run home with a sacrifice bunt in the fourth, when Amanda Ross put UTC ahead with a groundout RBI. ASU (9-15, 1-1) got its run on a Sarah Warnock homer.

Cynthia Gomez batted in two runs and scored one in the Mountaineers' win, while sophomore Shivaun Landeros a(6-7) llowed only two UTC hits. Sarah Beth Roberts had an RBI double in defeat.

Taylor Deason pitched into the fifth inning, giving up six hits and three runs, only one of which was earned. Henderson gave up one hit and one run while getting the last five outs.

* Chattanooga State 19-15, Volunteer State 0-16: At Gallatin, Tenn., the visiting Lady Tigers fell in the second game of a TCCAA doubleheader after a five-inning blowout win for the second day in a row. Hanna Manley was their winning pitcher Saturday, as Syndey Sloan was 4-for-5 with three doubles and four RBIs, Baylee Wiliams and Katy Richardson each was 3-for-5 with three and two RBIs and Lindsey Stickrod had four RBIs and matched Williams with a two-run homer.

Chattanooga State (27-5, 13-4) led 12-2 in the fifth inning of game two, and Dana Horgan was 3-for-5 with two RBIs, Williams had another two-run homer and totaled four RBIs, Elyse Ferguson was 3-for-4 and Stickrod also homered.

Chatt State won 12-0 and lost 9-5 to Vol on Friday, when Horgan was 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI while Shelby Willard improved her pitching record to 11-0 in game one. Also in that game, Richardson was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Sharlene Godoy was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer, Williams and Stickrod each was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Emily Dagnan homered. Williams had a two-run homer and Khadija Neely also homered in the loss, while Richardson was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

* USC Beaufort 7-4, Bryan 0-0: At Hardeeville, S.C., the hosts rose to 18-4 while holding the Lady Lions to six hits in the doubleheader. Becca Zimmerman was 2-for-3 in game one for Bryan (12-11), which got only one hit off Ashlie Layman (8-0) in game two.

* LaGrange 6-2, Covenant 3-0: On Lookout Mountain, the Lady Scots fell to 6-12, 3-7 in the USA South, with only two hits off Dani Gravett in the second game. Chandler Shepherd was 2-for-3 with a triple and scored twice and Morgan Lane was 2-for-3 with an RBI double sand a run in the first loss.

* Coker 6-0, Carson-Newman 4-4: At Jefferson City, Tenn., Jessica Morgan from Ooltewah was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Caitlyn Lance from Ridgeland had an RBI and a run as Carson-Newman salvaged a split in its opening South Atlantic Conference doubleheader. Ooltewah's Sara Kelley had an RBI in the first-game loss for the Lady Eagles (20-6, 1-1).
