Alabama police ID body as missing man
CEDAR BLUFF, Ala. - Authorities in Cherokee County said a body found in Weiss Lake has been identified as that of a man who's been missing since February.
Cedar Bluff police say forensics officials have identified the dead man as 31-year-old Michael Adam Maddox.
Maddox was last seen on Feb. 16 in a campground in Cedar Bluff. The body was found Sunday afternoon in the water near the campground.
Police said they haven't determined the cause of death.
Women accused in jail drugs case
ROME, Ga. - Authorities in Northwest Georgia say five women accused of trying to smuggle drugs to jail inmates have been arrested.
Floyd County Jail Administrator Maj. Bob Sapp told the Rome News-Tribune the women were arrested in two separate incidents on Sunday within about an hour of each other.
Authorities said the women are accused of trying to smuggle suspected crack cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana and tobacco into the facility using dental hygiene products. Sapp said the women tried altering the packaging of some of the products.
The women are charged with coming behind guard lines to deliver controlled substances to inmates, a felony offense. They also face drug charges.
Callaway funeral set Wednesday
COLUMBUS, Ga. - Arrangements have been made for family and friends to say farewell to former Georgia congressman Bo Callaway.
The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports a funeral mass will be held Wednesday in Pine Mountain for Callaway, who also served as Army secretary and helped found Callaway Gardens. He died Saturday at age 86 at an assisted-living facility in Columbus from complications from a brain hemorrhage he suffered about two years ago.
Callaway won election to the U.S. House in 1964, becoming Georgia's first Republican congressman since Reconstruction. He was appointed Army secretary in 1973.
Gov. Nathan Deal on Monday announced that he will proclaim Wednesday as Howard "Bo" Callaway Day in Georgia, and he has ordered flags flown at half-staff throughout the state that day.
"Few individuals throughout our history can match the legacy that Bo Callaway left on Georgia politics," Deal said. "Bo blazed a trail that led to the dramatic growth of the Georgia GOP, which went from virtually nonexistent when he ran for governor to holding every statewide elected office today. ... Sandra and I send our deepest sympathies to the Callaway family."
Deputy shoots, kills man after 911 call
CUMMING, Ga. - Authorities say a sheriff's deputy in North Georgia shot and killed a man while responding to a 911 call.
WSB-TV reports few details were immediately available about the shooting early Monday in Forsyth County, about 40 miles northeast of Atlanta.
The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office said the shooting involved a deputy who had been sent to a home by 911 operators. Authorities did not immediately say why a deputy was sent to the home or what circumstances led to shots being fired.
Authorities say the man killed was in his 50s.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating.
