Tennessee Wesleyan College guards Courtney Gobble from Walker Valley High School and Bailey Lyness from Red Bank and fellow senior Madison McWilliams from Dandridge, Tenn., were named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes for Division II women's basketball for 2013-14, along with Bryan College junior guard Kelsey Brooks from Pigeon Forge. Bryan also had a men's Scholar-Athlete, senior guard Caleb Parsons from Crossville. Anyone considered must be at least a junior academically with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
Baseball
• The Berry College baseball team blew an eight-run lead against visiting Covenant College but then overcame a five-run deficit and won 16-15 in 13 innings Tuesday. The teams totaled 42 hits, 22 for Covenant, which scored three runs in the sixth inning and 10 in the seventh to go up 14-9 but then gave up six runs in the next two innings while adding one in the eighth. Alex McGill was 5-for-7 with two doubles and three RBIs for Berry (15-5). Scott Gillespie and Z Arima each was 4-for-6 for the Scots (9-6), and Gillespie homered and matched David Lockwood's three RBIs and three runs scored. Will Cleland and Chris Rollins each had three hits and two RBIs and Paul Phillips was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs in defeat.
• Cleveland State's scheduled home baseball doubleheader Tuesday against Piedmont's junior varsity was canceled. The Cougars (13-12, 5-7) will host Columbia State in a TCCAA three-game series Friday and Saturday.
Softball
• Former Grace Academy and Chattanooga State star Lacye Walker was the Peach Belt Conference softball player of the week after batting .625 with a 1.188 slugging percentage, seven runs batted in and five scored in Armstrong Atlantic State's 6-0 run as league play opened. Walker had RBIs in five of the six games and hit two home runs and three doubles. She was 2-for-2 with a homer and a double against the reigning NFCA national pitcher of the week and now leads the PBC in batting average and RBIs and is third in homers.
• Piedmont College freshman Allison Vaughn from Heritage High School was the USA South softball rookie of the week after going 9-for-18 with a home run, a double, two walks, six runs scored and three RBIs as the Lady Lions, ranked 12th in NCAA Division II, went 6-0.
• Covenant won 8-0 and 14-4 over Wesleyan (Ga.) in softball Tuesday at Macon. Jordan Brett was 3-for-4 with three doubles and an RBI, Morgan Lane and Cori Hilt had two hits and two RBIs apiece and Hilt pitched a three-hitter in the first game for the Lady Scots (8-12). In game two, Lane and Brett each had three hits and scored three runs, Lane with two RBIs, while Kendall Whann had two hits and three RBIs and Kaitlyn Simmons was 2-for-3 and scored twice.
Lacrosse
• Sewanee's Michael Morris was the Southern Athletic Association men's lacrosse player of the week after his seven goals and six assists in two matches last week. It was his second time to get the award this season.
Tennis
• The Sewanee women's tennis team, ranked 15th in NCAA Division III, closed out its weekend in California by beating Biola 8-1 and Whittier 7-2. The Tigers (9-2) won all six doubles matches and got two singles wins each from Bronte Goodhue, Lindsey Liles, Kate Johnston and Elske Parker. They play again today in Claremont, Calif., against Salisbury.
• Berry College won 9-0 over the Covenant men's tennis team and 8-1 over the Lady Scots on Tuesday. Claire Luger won 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 at No. 3 singles and was part of a 9-7 doubles loss with Gretchen Rowe for host Covenant (8-4).
Soccer
• The Chattanooga Football Club announced Tuesday that it is merging its Chattanooga FC Academy with the Redoubt and North River Soccer associations "for the advancement of youth soccer in the Chattanooga area." The release said the merger "will create a full spectrum of soccer offerings, from the purely recreational to 'rec-plus' all the way to full 'select' travel soccer, and it will do so with a geographical footprint that serves the entire Chattanooga area, from East Brainerd to Hixson and all points in between." Representatives from the three organizations will establish a new board for the merged program. According to the CFC's Sean McDaniel, "The move was logical. Redoubt and North River have the fields, lots of registered players and volunteer parents, and we have the expertise in running and managing youth soccer at the highest level." All three entities already are members of the Tennessee State Soccer Association. Further information will be available at a meeting April 6 at 5:30 p.m. at Finley Stadium.
