Shelby Willard got both pitching wins as nationally eighth-ranked Chattanooga State defeated visiting Dyersburg State 4-1 and 6-5 in TCCAA softball Friday. The former Central High School standout pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts in the first game and threw the last two innings of game two, which ended on Lindsey Stickrod's RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Stickrod went 2-for-4 while Khadija Neely was 3-for-3 with a two-run home run and a double and Izzy McCurry hit a three-run homer for the Lady Tigers (29-5, 14-4). Katy Richardson was 1-for-2 with two walks and a two-run homer in the first game, when Elyse Ferguson was 2-for-3. The teams play another doubleheader today, beginning at 1 p.m.
* Bryan 7-0, Virginia Intermont 5-0: At Dayton, the host Lady Lions used a four-run third inning to take control of the first game of the Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader. In game two, though, they couldn't score with five hits while Kaitie Sims pitched a four-hitter with six strikeouts.
Bryan's Katie Vaughn and Olivia Gore each was 2-for-3 with a double and three and two RBIs in the first game, when Heidi Daniel drove in two runs, Jill Davis scored three and pitcher Sarah Hundley gave up 11 hits but struck out 12 batters. Heather Daniel was 2-for-3 in the loss for Bryan (14-13, 3-1).
* Sewanee 3-5, Wesleyan 1-4: At Macon, Ga., the Tigers improved to 3-9 with Sarah Fleming going 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run and Michelle Thibodeaux pitching a six-hitter in game one. Kate Heil had two hits in that win and went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and was the winning pitcher with Thibodeaux getting a save in the rematch.
Tori Haugvoll, who tripled and scored in the first game, was 2-for-4 along with Fleming, Courtney Saunders and Grace Cobbs in game two.
* Methodist 8-5, Covenant 4-2: At Fayetteville, N.C., the Lady Scots fell to 8-16 overall and 3-11 in the USA South despite a 5-for-7 day for Lauren Johns. She was 3-for-3 with two RBIs in the first game, when Chandler Shepherd had two hits and scored twice and Jordan Brett hit a two-run double.
Lady Vols roll
Third-ranked Tennessee whipped South Carolina 11-2 in a five-inning SEC softball game Friday in Knoxville, as Madison Shipman went 2-for-3 with a grand slam and five RBIs and pitcher Ellen Renfroe went to 17-0 with a three-hitter and one earned run.
Melissa Davin batted in three runs, Taylor Koenig was 3-for-3, Rainey Gaffin and Megan Geer were a combined 4-for-5 and scored twice each and Haley Tobler was 1-for-2 with a two-run homer for the Lady Vols (26-3, 3-1).
