As a part of its speed reduction initiative, Chattanooga is activating three new photo speed reduction units today to encourage drivers to respect the speed limit in places the city says are more dangerous than most.

The photo speed detectors are going live in the 1100 block of Mountain Creek Road near Red Bank Elementary; in the 4600 block of Norcross Road in Hixson and in the 200 block of Germantown Road between Interstate 24 and Brainerd Road .

According to a news release from the city, speed studies and accident reports have shown those three locations have crash rates between 1.7 and 2.5 times the statewide average for similar streets.

Ticket revenues from photo speed enforcement stations fund traffic safety programs such as driver education, the release said.

The announcement of the three new speeding reduction cameras comes just a month after public outcry caused officials in the county to change their minds on a similar issue.

County commissioners had voted to allow the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office to contract with a company and use two camera-equipped speed detection lasers to ticket drivers without making traffic stops. But they reversed course following a deluge of complaints from constituents.

"The goal of the speed reduction initiative is to reduce accidents and improve the safety of our streets by encouraging safer driving speeds," the release said.
