UTC women golfers 6th in Briar's Creek - and more Chattanooga area sports news

Led by top-10 individual finishes from Emily McLennan and Agathe Sauzon, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golf team finished sixth Tuesday at 901 in the Briar's Creek Invitational tournament at Johns Island, S.C. That was two strokes behind 11th-ranked Clemson and only 13 behind winner Texas Tech. Penn State was second at 892. McLennan and Sauzon closed with a 71 and a 72, respectively, and tied for seventh and ninth at 220 and 221, and Jordan Britt tied for 22nd at 225.

• Chattanoogans Lake Johnson and Blakesly Warren won the Ashworth Elite Series junior golf tournament this past weekend at Black Creek Club. It included 42 of the top 100 boys and 18 of the top 50 girls in Tennessee. On his home course, Johnson edged Knoxville's Chip Thomas and Dickson's Hunter Wolcott by one stroke with a 1-under-par 143. He's a junior at Chattanooga Christian. Warren, a Baylor senior committed to Tennessee, won the girls' division by nine strokes with her 147. She earned four AJGA PBE exemption stars.

• Tennessee Wesleyan won by nine strokes over host Trevecca Nazarene and the Bulldogs' Josh Wheeler was the medalist with a 147 in the 10-team Trevecca Spring Invitational golf tournament Monday and Tuesday at Old Hickory Country Club. Meanwhile, the Wesleyan women were second in the nine-team tournament they hosted at Springbrook in Niota. The TWC men totaled 599 with a first-day 295, and Travis Rodgers tied for second at 148 while Zack Acuff shared ninth place at 151 and Evan Ball tied for 21st at 156. The Lady Bulldogs' Stephanie Carr is the reigning AAC women's golfer of the week after she and teammate Lexi Stewart from Soddy-Daisy tied for second in the team's championship of the SCAD Atlanta Spring Invitational.

• The Covenant College men's golf team tied Berry for sixth out of 10 teams in the Wynlakes Intercollegiate Invitational that ended Tuesday in Montgomery, Ala. Covenant's Cameron Lewis tied for 18th individually at 157, one shot better than teammate Scott McKnight.

• Dalton State's Chase Jones tied for second at 152 and Anthony D'Angelo tied for seventh at 154 as the Roadrunners finished second to the hosts in the 12-team Emmanuel Invitational that ended Tuesday at the Cateechee Golf Club in Hartwell, S.C. Coastal Georgia was third by a stroke at 622 with Dalton High School graduate Chase Miller in a tie for fifth at 153. Dalton State's Tobias Ebner and Levi Nix tied for 17th at 157.

• Centre College junior Alyssa Brown from Baylor School finished second in the Rhodes Spring Invitational golf tournament at the Windyke Country Club in Memphis. The Colonels were second as a team as well. Brown's 36-hole 158 included a tourney-best 77 in the first round.

Softball

• Cleveland State's softball team ended a six-game losing streak with 27 hits and 10-3 and 10-2 wins Tuesday at home against the Piedmont junior varsity. Kelsey Haley pitched a five-hitter and Alexia Perian followed with a six-hitter for the Lady Cougars (9-23), who got three hits apiece from Emily Huston, Miranda Smith and Perry Hindi and two each from Hannah Powell, Amber Swaney and Baylee Carroll in the first game. Ashley Swaney's two-run double highlighted a four-run first inning in game two.

• Allison Vaughn from Heritage High School went 3-for-4 with a sacrifice fly, three RBIs and two runs scored as the Piedmont College team beat Wesleyan (Ga.) 11-3 and 7-2 on Monday. That made her 9-for-17 in her last six games for the 25-3 Lady Lions, ranked eighth in NCAA Division III, and she is batting .471 with team highs in homers, doubles and total bases.

• Bryan College's home softball doubleheader scheduled for Tuesday against Martin Methodist was called off.

Rugby

• Dianne Pamplona scored eight times in four matches as the UTC women's rugby club team finished second at the 32nd Nash Bash this past weekend in Nashville. The Lady Mocs outscored Hiram, Truman State and Wittenberg by a combined 88-32 before losing 10-3 to Wisconsin in the final. Anastasia Sharp, Rakerria Mines, Erin Mitchell and Bobbi Harris were defensive leaders in the fourth-year club's first time to earn hardware, and Ebony Freeman, Meagan Eatherly, Paige Dunham, Carrie Morton and Kala Fritz were other key contributors. UTC hosts Kentucky this Saturday at Montague Park.
