Lee's German adds to national honors and other sports news

Senior guard Hollie German from national runner-up Lee University was announced this week as the National Christian College Athletic Association Division I women's basketball player of the year and as one of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's 10 NCAA Division II All-Americans. Junior teammate Jenna Adams was a second-team NCCAA All-American. Adams also had made the all-national-tournamen team, and German, Karley Miller, Alex Swope and Jordan Neuharth were NCCAA Scholar-Athletes from the Cleveland school. German, from Polk County, became the Lady Flames' all-time leading scorer during the national tournament. She is fifth in career assists with 408 to go with her 2,300 points.

• Lee University's Cory Billingsley was a second-team NCCAA Division I men's basketball All-American for 2013-14, and Tennessee Temple's Elliot Johnson was a third-team selection. Lee's Chad Lee and Temple's Mitar Jovanovic were NCCAA Scholar-Athletes.

• Dalton State basketball coach Tony Ingle and Roadrunners players Ricky Sears and Demetrice Jacobs will be together in the Georgia Basketball Coaches Association Seniors All-Star Game this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta. It will include NCAA Division II and III and NAIA players. "This is a great opportunity for D.J. and R.S. to play and bring recognition to the Dalton State program," Ingle, who will coach their "Dark" team, said in a school release. "Any time you are recognized for your talents and efforts, it is an honor, and I'm sure they will put on a show." Ingle has reconnected in another way with Gordon College, the two-year school where he began his college coaching career. The coach there now is his son, Israel Ingle, and two Gordon players recently signed to join the Roadrunners: Devonte Thornton, a 6-foot-8 wing man, and Denarius Lockhart, a 6-9 center. "Our fans will love them and their athletic abilities," the elder Ingle said. Thornton averaged 18.9 points and 9.7 rebounds a game this past season and was second-team all-conference, while Lockhart averaged 11.4 rebounds with 13.3 points and received all-conference honorable mention. "Devonte is a pretty versatile player who can create his own shot," Tony Ingle coach said of the former R.L. Osborne standout in Marietta, originally a Florida Atlantic signee. "Denarius has a dominating presence and gives another big man who can help us inside." Said Israel Ingle of the former Crawford High player in Roberta, Ga.: "Denarius is explosive. He shattered a backboard in high school and maintains a huge presence in the paint."

Tennis

• Sewanee swept the Southern Athletic Association tennis players-of-the-week honors with Bronte Goodhue from Chattanooga and Girls Preparatory School the women's recipient and Avery Schober earning the men's award. Goodhue, the 2013 SAA player of the year, was 5-0 in No. 1 singles and 5-1 in doubles for the female Tigers on spring break; she is 10-1 in each for the season. Schober also plays No. 1 and beat NCAA Division III's 17th-ranked player as well as three other singles opponents last week.

Baseball

• Covenant College third baseman Perry Rigby received honorable mention as the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's NCAA Division III hitter of the week for his 13-for-21 (.619) batting in four games, with six runs scored and eight batted in. He was 12-for-14 with four doubles and the eight RBIs in a weekend sweep of Greensboro. The Scots won 5-2 on Thursday at LaGrange in a USA South series opener moved up a day because of the expected rain, and Rigby scored twice. David Lockwood had a two-run double in the top of the first inning for Covenant (14-6, 10-3), and Micah Mabe pitched a six-hitter with 10 strikeouts in nine innings.

Softball

• Allison Vaughn from Heritage High School continued her strong offense for nationally ranked Piedmont in a doubleheader sweep of Maryville on Wednesday. She was 3-for-7 with a walk and two runs scored.

• Bryan College won 13-4 and lost 6-5 at Point University in an Appalachian Athletic Conference softball doubleheader moved to Thursday from Friday. Becca Zimmerman was 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs and Katie Vaughn was 2-for-3 with a triple, a double, three RBIs and three runs in the win for Bryan (17-16, 6-2), while Katelyn Bowen was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Heidi Daniel also had two RBIs and Heather Daniel, Taylor Yates and Mariam Wood each had two hits in support of pitcher Kaitie Sims. In the loss, Yates had two RBIs, Heather Daniel scored twice and Zimmerman, Jill Davis and Heidi Daniel had two hits apiece. Amber Anderson had five RBIs with two hits for Point (11-19, 5-9) in its win.

Football

• Ernie McCarson, former high school football coach at Hixson and Tyner and at one time an assistant principal at Soddy-Daisy, underwent triple-bypass heart surgery this week at Erlanger hospital. As of Thursday afternoon he was doing well but was still in the cardiac intensive care unit. While he is retired from the Hamilton County school system, McCarson still volunteers as an assistant coach for Signal Mountain's Bill Price.
