Staff Report

The Black Jacket Symphony will return to the Tivoli Theatre on Saturday, May 3, for a precise rendition of Prince's "Purple Rain."

Just as traditional symphonies reproduce classical composers' top works, the Black Jacket Symphony re-creates classic albums in their entirety, note for note, sound for sound. Founder J. Willoughby handpicks the performers for each show from a network of top musicians.

The 1984 release, the soundtrack to the film "Purple Rain," is regularly ranked among the best albums in music history. Time magazine ranked it the 15th greatest album of all time in 1993, and it placed 18th on VH1's Greatest Rock and Roll Albums of All Time countdown. It won two Grammy Awards, out of three nominations, as well as an Oscar for Best Original Song Score.

Following the cover of "Purple Rain" and a brief intermission, the musicians will return to the stage to present a collection of Prince's greatest hits.
