Fifth-seeded Bryan College began the Appalachian Athletic Conference baseball tournament Monday in Kingsport, Tenn., with a 13-inning 4-3 win over fourth seed St. Andrews and will face top-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan tonight. TWC (31-20-1) beat Virginia Intermont 8-3 in Monday's much-delayed final game. Just before it, Milligan's 6-5 defeat of Reinhardt went 11 innings. Bryan (30-25) gave up two runs in the top of the eighth but scored the tying run in the bottom half, and it was five innings before the tie was broken on Crandon Wallace's second RBI, a sacrifice fly. Grant Zawadzki, Preston King and Cody Rhinehart each had two hits for the Lions, Zawadzki scoring twice and King driving in a run. L.J. Rowden pitched the first eight innings and allowed only one earned run in the three the Knights scored, and Kenny Knudsen went the last 4 2/3 innings with no hits and five strikeouts. Michael Durig was 2-for-4 with a home run for St. Andrews (26-22). Taylor Patterson pitched seven innings for Wesleyan, allowing only an unearned run, and Matt Malloy and Tim Kiene each was 2-for-4, Malloy with two RBIs and Kiene with one RBI and two runs. Seth Davis was 4-for-4 for Intermont.

Softball

• University of Tennessee at Chattanooga sophomore Katie Henderson was named Monday the Southern Conference softball pitcher of the week for the second time in three weeks. The Silverdale Baptist Academy graduate who transferred from Kentucky was 2-0 with no earned runs allowed in the Lady Mocs' weekend sweep of Western Carolina that lifted them to second place going into the conference tournament Wednesday at Greensboro, N.C. Henderson struck out 11 batters and allowed only one extra-base hit, a double, in 12 innings against WCU, and she has 16 wins, a 1.79 ERA and 143 strikeouts in 160 2/3 innings.

• Tennessee Tech senior catcher Chelsea Burgess from Sequatchie County High School and Chattanooga State was chosen the Ohio Valley Conference softball player of the week after batting .625 in a three-game sweep of Morehead State that capped an 11-2 regular-season finish for the Golden Eagles (23-33, 15-12). She was 4-for-4 with two home runs and five RBIs in Tech's 14-7 win Sunday.

Tennis

• The Sewanee tennis teams both learned Monday their opponents and sites in NCAA Division III national first-round matches Friday. The 20-3 and 20th-ranked Sewanee women's team coached by Conchie Shackelford will open against Hanover (15-4) in Atlanta, while the 14-6 Sewanee guys coached by John Shackelford will face Elmhurst (16-4) in St. Louis in their first national tournament in eight years.

Auto Racing

• Eric Mann from Summerville, Ga., won the Super Pro class and $1,500 Saturday night at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip in a car used to victory. He won with a 5.34-second burst on a 5.34 dial in his 1996 Ford Probe powered by a modified 555-cubic-inch Chevrolet engine with injected alcohol. The late Jim Reece won more than 50 races in five years in that car, according to Optimist club representative Red Harris. Lance Kittle of Henagar, Ala., was second with a 6.16 run on a 6.15 dial in a 1995 S-10 pickup. Rodney Johnson of Cleveland won the Foot Brake class with a 6.90 on a 6.89 in a 1994 Camaro SS, with Chris Smith of Ringgold second in a 1978 Nova. Hunter Hill of Henagar was the Junior Dragster winner with Soddy-Daisy's Kaleb Winters second. Taylor Sweeten had the low elapsed time (4.67 seconds) and top speed (149 mph) of the meet in his 632-ci dragster.

Sailing

• Dennis Slaton of the Lake Lanier Sailing Club won the Chattanooga Challenge for Catalina 22 sailboats Saturday and Sunday on Lake Chickamauga. Slaton won all five of his races in the competition hosted by Privateer Yacht Club, and Privateer's Tom Clark and Rob Fowler were second overall and earned the Catalina 22 Tennessee state championship. PYC sailor Lucas Kindervater was third in the 20-boat event, followed by Pete Page of Montgomery, Ala., and PYC's David Bergevin.

Lacrosse

• Former McCallie School goalkeeper Patton Watkins had a career-high 24 saves for Tufts University in its NESCAC championship win Sunday over Amherst, which took 54 shots. The 20-13 triumph gave the Jumbos their fifth consecutive league title and seventh NCAA Championship appearance. Watkins was a 2010 high school All-American at McCallie.
