David Newman shoots his age, 71, at Chatata Valley

David Newman shot his age at Chatata Valley in Cleveland on April 25.

The 71-year-old said he had to get up-and-down on the last hole for the 71 while playing with Robert Gilliland.

"We were playing two other guys and we beat them pretty bad," Newman said. "I had a three-footer on the last, and I got to know what it's like for the pros on a Sunday."

He shot a 34 on the front nine. His round included four birdies and three bogeys.

"I thought about it driving to the course because it was a warm and sunny day," said Newman, who has been playing for about 50 years. "But then I didn't think about it until the turn."

It was his first time to reach a goal he set for himself as a 68-year-old.

"I surely thought I'd get it when I was 70," he said. "I just had to wait another year."
