McCallie School's Tony Meyers is pictured in this file photo.McCallie School soccer and golf coach Tony Meyers is leaving Chattanooga to accompany his wife to New Rochelle, N.Y., and the school has hired from within for both positions.
Former Covenant College standout Chris Cushenberry, who has taught math and coached soccer at McCallie since 2008, will be the new varsity soccer coach. The Denver native also served three years as an assistant coach with the Chattanooga Football Club and has worked in local youth leagues, and he has a master's degree in coaching education from Ohio University.
John Green, a 1984 McCallie graduate who also teaches math and is the Belk Hall dorm head, is the new Blue Tornado golf coach. He has been co-director of the school's summer golf program for eight years.
"We're excited at the chance to reward the hard work and dedicaton of two good men who have put in the time and effort as McCallie coaches and have earned an opportunity to lead the varsity programs," athletic director Bubba Simmons said in a recent school release.
They have big shoes to fill. Meyers has more than 140 soccer wins in his 14 seasons, with six trips to the Division II state semifinals and a finals appearance in 2010, when he was the NSCAA Tennessee state high school coach of the year. He began coaching the Blue Tornado golfers in 2008 and directed state championships in 2010 and 2011 and also has had two individual state champions.
"Tony is an excellent school man who will be very difficult to replace," associate headmaster and upper school head Kenny Sholl said in the release. "He is a can-do person who was a tremendous asset to McCallie."
Meyers will be teaching and coaching at Iona Preparatory School in New Rochelle, where his wife, Carol Killebrew, is the new principal at The Ursuline School.
"I have been blessed to be at a school like McCallie that has helped me grow as a coach," Meyers said in the release. "Much of my success can be attributed to the players and my assistant coaches. ... I will miss McCallie."
