The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's Jim Foster was voted the state's college women's basketball coach of the year by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association, and departed Tennessee Volunteers coach Cuonzo Martin received the corresponding men's honor. Foster, a Hall of Fame coach who previously had outstanding success at St. Joseph's, Vanderbilt and Ohio State, was 29-4 overall and undefeated in Southern Conference play in his first UTC season, which included his 800th college victory, and he became the first coach in NCAA history to take four schools to the women's Division I national tournament. He was the TSWA coach of the year twice while at Vandy. Martin's Vols won eight of their last 10 games this year, reached the NCAA Sweet 16 and wound up 24-13.

Softball

• After winning its first two games in the NJCAA Division I softball tournament at St. George, Utah, fourth-seeded Chattanooga State lost 4-2 on Friday to eighth seed Central Florida but then edged sixth seed Odessa 2-0 in eight innings and beat Southern Union State 10-3 to assure no worse than a third-finish today in the 16-team event. The Lady Tigers (55-7) face Central Florida again in the losers-bracket final at noon EDT. Hanna Manley, the team's No. 3 pitcher, went the distance in the extra-inning shutout, and Khadija Neely sparked the two-run top of the eighth, scoring the go-ahead run, and second baseman Dana Horgan made a superb play to end an Odessa threat in the bottom of the eighth. Chattanooga State catcher Emily Dagnan had three hits against Southern Union on her birthday. Courtney Crawford and Horgan at the top of the order scored the two runs against Central Florida in the sixth inning.

• Lee University catcher and first baseman Ana Coscorrosa from Venezuela is the National Christian College Athletic Association softball player of the year after capping her four-year Lady Flames career with a .471 batting average, 10 home runs and 73 RBIs in 2014. She set school career records with a .451 average, 275 hits and 231 RBIs. She also made the NFCA NCAA Division II South Region first team. Lee teammates Lexie Dean (.436, 72 hits) and Amanda Lynn (.444, 29 steals) made the NCCAA All-American second team along with Tennessee Temple's Raven Pope (.457, 63 hits, 30 RBIs), a USCAA first-team All-American, and Union University's Reagan Schrader (.362, 14 HRs, 55 RBIs) from Grace Academy. Shorter freshman Ericka Bynum (.404, 10 HRs, 57 RBIs) from Ringgold and Trevecca Nazarene pitcher Haley Fagan, who played last year for Chattanooga State, joined Coscorrosa on the NCCAA first team. Temple's Savannah Brownlee and Jillian McGill were second-team All-Mid-East Region with Lee's Dominique Hannah.

Soccer

• The Chattanooga Football Club men's team is 2-0 and playing its National Premier Soccer League season home opener tonight at 7:30 at Finley Stadium, against the Nashville FC, and the CFC women's team will make its debut Sunday at 1 at Finley against the Mississippi Fuego FC from Ellisville, Miss. In each case tickets cost $7 at the gate but only $5 online at www.chattanoogafc.com.

Baseball

• Lee University came back from an opening loss Wednesday to win Pool B in the NCCAA national baseball tournament in Mason, Ohio. The Flames (36-18) beat Trevecca Nazarene 4-1 on pitcher Jeremy Stawychny's five-hitter and downed Cedarville 9-3 on Friday. Derrick Pitts was 3-for-4 against Trevecca and went 2-for-4 with a home run, a triple and three RBIs against the Ohio team, when Josh Silver was 2-for-3 with a homer, a double and two RBIs. Andres Nelo was 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI, and Zack Zyburt was 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs.

• Rhodes College scored five runs with one hit in the bottom of the eighth inning -- four of them unearned -- and beat Covenant College 5-3 late Thursday night in the NCAA Division III South Regional baseball tournament at Demorest, Ga. That ended Covenant's season at 26-15 and left the Lynx at 33-16 going into today's play. The Scots outhit Rhodes 10-4 with Scott Gillespie, Perry Rigby and David Lockwood each going 2-for-4 and K.C. Simons, Chris Rollins and Z Arima batting in runs. Alhanon Miller pitched into the eighth and totaled six strikeouts, five walks and a hit batter to go with the four hits. The first three Lynx runs were credited to him, but only one was earned.

Golf

• Sewanee's Emily Javadi from Chattanooga finished sixth in the NCAA Division III women's golf tournament at Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort at El Campeon near Orlando, Fla. The Baylor School graduate shot 315 for four rounds, two shots better than last year when she tied for 18th. Sewanee rival Rhodes won the team title by 24 strokes.
