Central Magnet beats Boyd-Buchanan Buccaneers in OT, 3-1

Emotional Boyd-Buchanan soccer players filed one by one out of their locker room Saturday night, a heartbreaking loss still heavy on their shoulders.

With the clock winding down on their season in regulation, they delivered, but Central Magnet scored two overtime goals to take a 3-1 victory.

The Tigers from Murfreesboro took the lead early, Luke Duross heading a corner kick into the net in the eighth minute.

Buccaneers coach Dustin Walker admitted the early score "was kind of a shock."

"We had heard they were a good team and big," Walker said. "I think after that we put them on their heels."

Although it took control of the game, Boyd-Buchanan could not manage a goal. Then, with three minutes of its season left, Zach Jenkins found a way to score. A header was deflected off a corner kick, and Jenkins got a foot on the ball to send the game into overtime.

"We pressed and pressed and pressed and created a lot of opportunities," Walker said.

In the first overtime, Central Magnet found the net again, nearly 80 minutes after its first goal. Duross again put a header past the goalkeeper to secure a lead.

A minute later, Christian Hortert sneaked one past Andreas Mosvold to deliver a dagger. Mosvold appeared to have smothered the ball, but it squeaked out from under him and found the net.

"Sometimes it's just about how the ball bounces," Walker said. "We played hard enough to win, but it just didn't go our way.

"This is one of the best teams I've been a part of," he said. "We have such great leadership on this team. You saw our two captains put every ounce of who they are out there.

"The guys on this team play with so much heart, so I really hate it for them. It's sad that it's over because we love what we had. It was so much about the team with these guys."
