The Chattanooga Lookouts opened their series Wednesday night against visiting Mississippi without shortstop Erisbel Arruebarrena, who was called up to Los Angeles.

Arruebarrena received the promotion after Dodgers third baseman Juan Uribe was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring. The 24-year-old Cuban played in 25 games for the Class AA Lookouts, hitting .208 with four doubles, one triple, one home run and six RBIs.

In his last seven games with the Lookouts, Arruebarrena hit .379.

"He's going to pick it up," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly told reporters before Wednesday night's game in New York. "We simply feel he can catch it and cover. Those are the things we like most."

The Dodgers defeated the Mets 4-3 with Hanley Ramirez playing shortstop and with Arruebarrena not getting into the game. Ramirez has been nursing a sore thumb since late April, and Mattingly said Arruebarrena could provide him the occasional day off.

Chattanooga suffered a 9-3 loss to Mississippi before 2,745 at AT&T Field. The Braves racked up six runs on nine hits in three innings against Lookouts starting pitcher Nick Struck, who gave up two-run doubles to Matt Kennelly and Elmer Reyes in the first inning.

Arruebarrena is a childhood teammate of Dodgers right fielder Yasiel Puig and signed a five-year, $25 million contract in February. He stayed in extended spring for three weeks before joining the Lookouts.

The Dodgers could have called up Triple-A Albuquerque infielder Alex Guerrero, but Guerrero had had part of his ear bitten off Tuesday night in Salt Lake City during a dugout altercation with teammate Miguel Olivo. Guerrero reportedly underwent surgery Wednesday and could miss a month of action.
