Covenant College won the USA South men's cross country meet for the second year in a row and finished second by three points to Meredith in the women's race Saturday at Hagan Stone Park in Greensboro, N.C. The Scots' Graham Massot won the 8-kilometer men's race in 27 minutes, 3 seconds, and teammates Eliot Kaufman (27:44.09), John Weaks, Stephen Dillon and Jack Williams were third, fifth, sixth and 10th. Covenant's Beth Burgess, the defending champion, was second in 24:28.38 to Maryville's Emily Guillaume in the 6k, but Meredith had the next three finishers. Covenant's Jordan Francis was seventh with Ruthie Cargill and Abby Irwin ninth and 10th. Kaufman and Burgess already were honored as the runners of the year.

• Sewanee was third in the women's meet and fifth in the men's at the Southern Athletic Association cross country meet Saturday at Huntsville, Ala. Sewanee's Cate Hargrove, Ansley McDurmon and Amy Lee earned All-SAA honors by finishing eighth, ninth and 13th in the 6k. The Tigers' Logan Stockton was fourth in the 8k and joined on the all-conference team by Mark McAlister in 12th.

Soccer

• Snoopy Davidson's goal from a Joel Friesen assist in the 18th minute held up for a 1-0 Covenant win over Piedmont in a USA South men's soccer quarterfinal Saturday on Lookout Mountain. The second-seeded Scots (13-4-2) had a 15-8 margin in shots. They will face No. 3 seed North Carolina Wesleyan in the semifinals Friday in Martinsville, Va. Third-seeded women's seed Methodist edged the Lady Scots 1-0 in Fayetteville, N.C. Lucy Johnson made nine saves for Covenant, which ended its season 9-10-1.

• Berry College beat both Sewanee soccer teams 2-0 in an SAA doubleheader Saturday in Rome, Ga. Berry's women are 15-2, 7-0; Sewanee's are 12-5, 5-2. The Berry men are 9-6, 3-3-1; Sewanee's are 5-10-1, 2-4-1.

Volleyball

• East Tennessee State held off UTC 3-2 in a Southern Conference volleyball match Saturday night in Johnson City, and senior libero Katie Muey broke the Bucs' career record for digs. She has 1,701 after collecting 24 in the 25-21, 25-15, 18-25, 18-25, 16-14 match against the Mocs (12-16, 5-8). Briana Reid had 12 kills and 22 digs and Sarah Batterton had 10 kills for UTC, which got 14 digs, four aces, and seven kills from Allie Davenport, 20 and 19 assists from Anne Bachmann and Lauren Greenspoon and 23 digs from Melissa Green.

• Covenant's volleyball team improved to 24-9 overall and 12-4 in the USA South with 3-0 wins Saturday over LaGrange and Huntingdon in Montgomery, Ala. Ginny Moore had 11 kills and 14 digs and twin Schuyler Moore had nine kills and 14 assists in the 25-17, 25-17, 25-13 defeat of LaGrange, while Stephanie Kirkpatrick had 18 assists, Chloe Carlson had 23 digs, Christina Argaez served six aces and Cora Schroeder had eight kills. Carlson had 22 digs in the 25-19, 26-24, 25-22 conquest of the host team, while Ginny Moore had 13 kills and her sister added eight plus 16 assists.

• Carson-Newman's two Chattanooga-area stars paced a 3-2 volleyball win Saturday that ended seventh-ranked Wingate's 55-match South Atlantic Conference win streak and gave the Lady Eagles (22-5, 17-2) their first victory over the Bulldogs (25-2, 18-1) since September 2005. Rachel Harper from Boyd-Buchanan had 18 kills, 15 digs and three aces and Kristen Pickett from Cleveland High School had 49 assists and 19 digs in the 17-25, 25-20, 28-26, 19-25, 15-13 match.

• Cleveland High graduate Payton Tipton had 19 digs in King University's 3-1 volleyball win Saturday at Mount Olive, after registering 16 plus three aces in a 3-1 win Friday at Barton. The Tornado (18-10, 10-4) lead the Conference Carolinas North Division with two matches to go.

• Dalton State defeated Martin Methodist 3-1 in SSAC volleyball Friday night in Dalton and won 3-0 Saturday against Bethel. Friday night, DSC senior Alyne Bianchi had 16 kills and 12 digs and Michala Askew had 40 assists, while Kianna Delaney had 13 kills, Anna Metzler added nine and Karly Newman made 18 digs for the Lady Roadrunners (14-10, 9-7).

Golf

• The defending champions from Dalton Golf & Country Club -- David Noll Jr. and Brandon Kimmerling with team newcomers Tyler Mitchell and Chase Miller -- are tied for second at 8-under-par 66 after the first day of the 22nd annual Georgia Team Championship golf competition at The Georgia Club at Statham. A Cartersville Country Club foursome including Calhoun's Cres Dodd leads at 65.

Field Hockey

• Carrie Anderson had two goals and an assist as the Sewanee field hockey team ended its regular season with a 4-3 win Saturday at Newberry. Emma Horgan and Virginia Barry also scored for the Tigers (8-7), who had a 12-4 edge in shots on goal.

Football

• UTC defensive line coach Marcus West will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without.

Boxing

• The boxing card in Atlantic City, N.J., that is headlined by Bernard Hopkins against Sergey Kovalev and includes Chattanooga native Ryan Martin in a lightweight bout against Mexico's Martin Cardona is this coming Saturday, not last night as was reported in Saturday's Times Free Press. Martin, 21, is 6-0 this year and 8-0 as a pro.
