Signal Mountain girls repeat state championship

NASHVILLE - The Signal Mountain girls' cross country team won its second consecutive Class A/AA state championship Saturday at Percy Warner Park.

The Lady Eagles placed four runners on the classification's all-state team: Mallory Young, Taylor Luthringer, Ale Diaz and Becca Umbarger -- all of whom had top-15 finishes, paced by Young's third-place run. Central Magnet freshman Taylor Cuneo was the individual winner in 18 minutes, 57.58 seconds for the five-kilometer course.

"I am so proud of this group of girls," Signal coach Dustin Carpenter said. "Their determination, resilience and perseverance have paid off."

Arts & Sciences was 14th and Polk County was 19th in the girls' race.

Chattanooga Christian's Gus Whitman finished fourth in the A/AA boys' race, in 16:25.86. He and Signal Mountain's Thomas Porter earned all-state honors, as Porter was 13th in 17:21.98.

The CCS boys were sixth in the A/AA race. Red Bank was 19th and Boyd-Buchanan 22nd.

Ooltewah's Josie Grube finished fifth in the AAA girls' race, finishing with the best time for an area runner in 18:53.04 and helping the Lady Owls to a 19th-place team finish. The Ooltewah boys were 23rd.
