A Dallas Bay man and his Siberian Husky escaped a house fire Saturday morning where a blaze caused an estimated $50,000 to his home, according to a news release by Hamilton County Emergency Services.

The fire started at 261 Serena Drive Saturday. Heavy smoke and and fire appeared from the left front side of the home. Brian Smelley, the home owner, was asleep until he heard his neighbor banging on the door telling him to "Get out. Your garage is on fire."

Before exiting his home, Smelley went back inside to search for his 6-year-old Siberian Husky, Chief. He found him in another bedroom hunkered down on the floor. They both escaped without injury. The fire was in the garage area.

Smelley reported that he planned to do laundry, cut on a space heater to warm the laundry room and laid down again until he heard pounding on his front door.

The Dallas Bay Volunteer Fire department saved three antique cars and the right side of the house. Smelley was insured.

Hamilton County EMS was on the scene for any potential injuries to firefighters. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is undetermined and will be under investigation by the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office. The American Red Cross met with Smelley for temporary housing.
