Dalton team finishes 2nd at Georgia team tourney and other sports news

The Dalton Golf & Country Club golfing contingent of David Noll Jr. of Dalton, Brandon Kimmerling and Tyler Mitchell of Chatsworth and Chase Miller of Rocky Face finished second at the 22nd annual Georgia Team Championship on Sunday at The Georgia Club in Statham with a two-day score of 356. Cres Dodd of Calhoun was part of the Cartersville Country Club group that won the title at 11-under-par 349. The Farm team of Matt Oxford, Greg Brock and Matt Eicholtz of Rocky Face and Greg Cottrell of Powder Springs finished 17th at 378.

Wrestling

• Highlighted by senior Shawn Greevy's 12-9 win over freshman Kamaal Shakur in a back-and-forth match at 149 pounds, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team's Blue-Gold intrasquad event Saturday at Maclellan Gym drew more than 400 fans and the praise of head coach Heath Eslinger. "It was a great effort today," Eslinger said in a school release. "I thought the attendance was great and the wrestling was great." Another impressive freshman performance was Alonzo Allen's 17-2 win at 125. Seniors Corey Mock at 165, Nick Soto at 133 and Sean Boyle at 125 won by pin, technical fall and major decision, respectively, and sophomore Jared Johnson won 17-2 at 285. The Mocs open their season Sunday at the Hokie Open.

Tennis

• The UTC women's tennis team finished the 2014 part of its schedule Saturday with three wins in five singles matches and two doubles victories at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The highlight for coach Jeff Clark's Mocs was the 8-4 victory by Kaylene Chadwell and Kayla Jones over the 26th-ranked Georgia Tech duo of Kendall Woodward and Johnnise Renaud. UTC's Katie Polk and Samantha Caswell edged Alabama's Carmen Blanco and Bennett Dunn 8-7 (6), and Jones over Georgia Tech's Alexis Prokopuik (7-6, 6-4), Alison Storie over Samford's Lauren Caballero (3-6, 6-2, 6-4) and Jovana Pecovski over Tulane's Zoe Gaber (6-1, 6-1) prevailed in singles. "It was great to wrap up play on a positive note," Clark said in a UTC release. "We got some positive results and definitely have something to build on heading into the spring."

Volleyball

• Carson-Newman's two Chattanooga-area stars paced a 3-2 volleyball win Saturday that ended seventh-ranked Wingate's 55-match South Atlantic Conference win streak and gave the Lady Eagles (22-5, 17-2) their first victory over the Bulldogs (25-2, 18-1) since September 2005. Rachel Harper from Boyd-Buchanan had 18 kills, 15 digs and three aces and Kristen Pickett from Cleveland High School had 49 assists and 19 digs in the 17-25, 25-20, 28-26, 19-25, 15-13 match.

• Cleveland High graduate Payton Tipton had 19 digs in King University's 3-1 volleyball win Saturday at Mount Olive, after registering 16 plus three aces in a 3-1 win Friday at Barton. The Tornado (18-10, 10-4) lead the Conference Carolinas North Division with two matches to go.

Basketball

• The basketball teams for two-year Georgia Northwestern Technical College opened their seasons Saturday by losing to four-year college Toccoa Falls at the Rossville Athletic Center, 65-29 in the women's game and 90-53 in the men's. The Bobcats' Cameron Sherlin scored 14 points and Dustin Stanley had nine rebounds with nine rebounds in defeat. For the Lady Bobcats, Ashley Farrell had 11 points with three steals, Kambria Bankston had 11 rebounds with nine points and Holly Mount had five blocked shots and eight rebounds.

Rugby

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's rugby team defeated Auburn 42-19 in a road match Saturday. Monica Brown scored three times for UTC, and Hannah Reynolds, Anastasia Sharp, Shaquila Golden, Rachel McGrail and freshman Marley Atkinson also scored. Bobbi Harris and Erin Mitchell each had strong games on defense for UTC.
