A Dalton man who attacked somebody with a claw hammer is going to prison for 10 years.

Superior Court Judge Cindy Morris sentenced 29-year-old Brandon Lee Silvers on Wednesday, three weeks after a Murray County jury found him guilty of aggravated assault.

According to a release from Conasauga Judicial Circuit District Attorney Bert Poston, Ken Arthur was checking his family's property off Highway 2 near the Whitfield County-Murray County line last December when he found another car parked there. He tried to write down the license plate number, but Silvers jumped in his car and attacked him with the claw hammer.

Arthur pushed Silvers out of the car, drove away and called 911. Murray County Sheriff's Cpl. Darrell Summey sent out a "be on the lookout" alert with a description of Silvers' vehicle and he eventually was arrested.

Silvers also was given 10 years of probation and a $2,000 fine. He must perform 200 hours of community service, receive substance abuse counseling, submit to random drug tests, undergo a mental health evaluation and stay away from Arthur.
