Lady Flames win NCCAA Mid-East Region title and other sports news

Four players scored in a dominant 4-0 win for the Lee University women's soccer team in the National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association Mid-East Region championship match Wednesday night in Cleveland. The Lady Flames (12-4-1) outshot visiting Campbellsville (13-8) 22-5 with a 14-4 advantage in shots on goal. Senior Kathryn Healy scored from a Kinsey Cichowitz pass 25:38 into the match, and Sarah Boyd followed up a blocked Healy shot for a 2-0 lead 12 minutes later. Cichowitz and freshman Morgan Sandifer had unassisted goals in the second half for Lee, which will play in the NCCAA national tournament in Kissimmee, Fla., for the second year in a row. It is set for Dec. 2-6.

Basketball

• Bryan College's Brandon Cole and Megan Billingsby were the first Appalachian Athletic Conference basketball players of the week for the 2014-15 season. It was the first such honor for Billingsby, but Cole was a five-time choice last year. Cole, a burly 6-foot-2 junior center from Crossville, had 34 and 27 points and 13 and 12 rebounds in two Lions wins last week, and he leads the NAIA in scoring. His average was 39.2 points per game on 58.5-percent field-goal shooting going into Wednesday's 98-74 home win over/ Bluefield for Bryan (6-0). The Lady Lions won 55-44 and are 6-1. Billingsby, a 5-10 sophomore, had 67 points and 35 rebounds in three wins last week, including 40 points and 14 rebounds against Talladega. She shot 65.2 percent from the field.

• The Tennessee Wesleyan basketball teams split an AAC doubleheader Wednesday at Milligan, with TWC winning 67-58 in the women's game and losing 75-71 in the men's. The win kept the Lady Bulldogs unbeated at 7-0 and 3-0 in league play. It was the second straight loss for the Bulldogs ( 4-2), who had lost 75-73 in overtime Monday night at Dillard. Milligan's Buffaloes went to 7-0 .

• The Dalton State men's basketball team improved to 4-0 for the season and dropped Hiwassee to 0-7 with an 89-54 win Tuesday night in Madisonville, Tenn. Jordan Bowling had 17 points and three steals, Preston Earle and Anthony Hilliard scored 14 and 13 points and Ladaris Green grabbed 13 rebounds for Dalton State. Jacob Elliott led the host Tigers with 11 points.

• The Bryan men's junior varsity beat Georgia Northwestern 87-78 on Tuesday, but Cameron Sherlin scored 29 points with eight 3-point baskets for the 0-4 Bobcats. Garret McAllister scored 17 points, VeShawn Bell had 10 points and five assists and Dustin Stanley had 12 rebounds in defeat.

Football

• Junior wide receiver Justin Houston from Bradley Central High School was one of two Tusculum College football players who made the All-South Atlantic Conference first team for 2014. Houston led the SAC with six receptions per game and totaled 66 for 643 yards and four touchdowns plus 17 kickoff returns for 473 yards and two TDs. He had 17 catches for 199 yards in one game and became the Pioneers' career leader with 216 receptions.

Baseball

• Local businessman, longtime umpire and baseball collector Dan Creed is having a "show-and-sell" this Saturday at the Brainerd BX from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and says he is making available "Lookouts memorabilia that a lot of people have never seen." Among his items for sale are team-signed baseballs from the 1970s through 1990s, jerseys going back to the 1950s, programs from the 1920s through the 1970s, autographs from longtime club owner Joe Engel, a framed and matted piece with two autographs on female pitcher Jackie Mitchell, baseball and softball bats from the Joe Engel Bat Company, game-used bats from the 1920s forward, gloves endorsed by Lookouts players from the 1930s on and Engel Stadium seats. "It's a whole lot of memorabilia dealing with many years of collecting," Creed said. The event will be held in the cafe area on the second floor of the BX buiding.
