The door was locked and the blinds closed at American Laser Skincare on Wednesday, evidence that the Michigan-based company with Gunbarrel Road office hadn't changed its mind.

Chattanooga's American Laser Skincare is closed, lock, stock and barrel.

The company shut down all of its nearly 140 offices across the U.S. with no explanation other than the "long-running economic downturn," late last week, according to the company's website.

American Laser Skincare filed bankruptcy in 2011, when it went by American Laser Centers.

The company now says it "simply could no longer afford to continue operating."

The sudden closure has left many customers and staffers in limbo.

"If you are a client with a treatment package that has not yet been completed, please know that we are taking steps to find alternative providers for you as quickly as possible. While we are working toward this end, we ask for your patience," the company states on its website.

Packages purchased after Nov. 12 will not be processed and those customers will not be charged.

Locally, Chattanooga's clinic closed late last week and a hand-written note is taped to the door at the Atrium Surgery Center.

"All Clients! So sorry for your inconvenience! Call corporate for appointment, treatment and finance questions," the note states.

No one answered the door or telephone at the office on Wednesday.

But a FedEx delivery man said someone had been in the office since Tuesday, because the blinds had been closed since his last visit.

He said it was FedEx's third attempt in two days to deliver a package.

Office workers in the Atrium building said over the last few months, American Laser's staff had dwindled, and some familiar faces had disappeared.

They knew nothing about the closure or how permanent it will be.

A USPS worker slipped mail under American Laser Skincare's door on Wednesday.

"They'll show up one of these days," he said.
