Record-setting day for GPS at McCallie swim meet andother sports news

Girls Preparatory School began the McCallie Invitational swim meet Saturday with a record-setting 200-yard medley relay and had two events with the top two finishers on the way to second place behind Harpeth Hall out of 24 teams. McCallie was fourth out of 19 boys' teams. April Forsthoffer, Susanna LaRochelle, Kristen Myers and Anna Ward set GPS, pool and meet records with their 1:47.07 in the medley, and LaRochelle had a USA Winter National Qualifying time in winning the 200 individual medley with Forsthoffer second in an NSCA Junior National qualifying time. Forsthoffer and Myers also had Junior National qualifying times in finishing first and second in the 100 butterfly, with East Hamilton's Sarah Beth Moore seventh, and Myers won the 100 backstroke with Moore fourth. LaRochelle won the 100 breaststroke in a Winter Junior National time with Silverdale Baptist's Haley Grider seventh, and Ward was third in the 50 free and 100 free with McMinn County's Mary Beth Ronne sixth in the 100. GPS's Abbie Kent was eighth in the 500 free, and her school was second in the 400 free relay. Arts & Sciences' Chris Butler won the boys' 100 breast and McCallie's Jon Pat Ransom was second in the 100 free and fourth in the 200 free, where Heritage's Jon Lancaster was third, Home-schooled Gabriel Johnson had a fourth and an eighth, McCallie's Max Milam and home-schooled Luke Massey each had a sixth place, McCallie's John Peter Davis and Barak Goren each had a seventh and an eighth and Heritage's Pierce Lively had an eighth. Baylor entered divers and had Alec Chennault and Ryan Smith first and third with McCallie's Eamon McFadden second and Alex Gray seventh, and Baylor's Emily Pelletier won the girls' event with GPS's Qynn Celichowski fifth and Baylor's Nottely Seagraves seventh.

BASKETBALL

Former Silverdale Baptist Academy point guard Mariah Massengill, now a sophomore at Eastern Kentucky University, made her first college start Friday against Central Arkansas in a consolation-bracket game in the Preseason WNIT at Hawkins Arena in Macon, Ga. The Colonels improved to 1-1 by winning 56-55 on the strength of two free throws with 10 seconds remaining by another sophomore guard, Michaela Hunter. Massengill scored seven points and totaled a career-high seven assists.

• The Sewanee women's basketball team used balance to improve to 4-0 for the season with a 60-51 win over visiting Rust on Sunday. Jamie Chauvin and Hannah McCormack led the Tigers with 10 points each, while three teammates scored eight apiece and four players had three assists each. Chauvin had nine rebounds and Haley McDonough and Casey Hassett had eight each, McDonough with seven on the offensive boards. Hassett blocked three shots. Kala Williams led Rust (1-5) with 16 points.
