Mentone plans 'mountain village' shopping experience

The shops of historic Mentone, Ala., atop Lookout Mountain have been decked out for a Holiday Open House on Thanksgiving weekend, offering three days of festive shopping and holiday cheer in one of the state's most scenic locations.

More than two dozen trendy boutiques, antiques shops and art galleries will feature an assortment of locally made gifts, unique items, holiday decorations and other treasures, all within an easily accessible, third-of-a-mile area. Many of the shops will serve refreshments and offer giveaways.

Most businesses will be open 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29; and noon-5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30 (all times are Central). Free parking is plentiful.

The goal, organizers say, is to offer shoppers a mountain-village atmosphere but without the crowds "for a more personal Christmas shopping experience."

Among the highlights of the weekend:

> The Log Cabin Village, 6086 Alabama Highway 117, will offer its annual Christmas party with decorations, music, refreshments and a visit with Santa Claus.

> The historic Mentone Inn, 6139 Alabama Highway 117, will open its doors for visitors to enjoy a break from shopping with a cup of hot cider and a cozy fire. Free tours will be offered, and college football games will be televised in the parlor.

> The Mentone Farmers Market, offering fresh vegetables, baked goods, canned specialties and other goods, will be open in the Mentone Inn's parking lot on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
