Hamilton County sheriff's deputies: The man who escaped them, Thomas Hughes, is in custody

UPDATE: The man who nearly ran over two deputies in a stolen car on Friday has been arrested in Catoosa County, according to a news release from the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office. One officer had to fire his weapon in that incident on Friday.

Thomas Lebron Hughes, 29, was arrested on charges of aggravated assault and reckless endangerment with a weapon.

In Hamilton County, Hughes has previously been charged with several assaults, driving on a revoked license on multiple occasions, vandalism, harassment, unlawful possession of a weapon, burglary, drug-related charges, and multiple thefts prior to this auto theft.

The latest incident happened when deputies arrived at 8903 Bramlett Road in Harrison around noon on Friday, after they received a report that a stolen vehicle was at that residence.

Upon arrival, deputies identified Hughes, who tried to escape in the stolen vehicle, according to a previous news release. He recklessly drove the vehicle towards the deputies, and at that point one of the officers fired his weapon at least once.

Hughes fled that scene, but abandoned the stolen vehicle, and a second stolen vehicle was also found at the residence. He was arrested in Catoosa County on Saturday, and his bond is not yet known.


PREVIOUSLY REPORTED

Two deputies had to take quick and evasive action Friday, one officer firing his weapon, to avoid being struck by a car driven by a suspect, according to a news release from the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies arrived at 8903 Bramlett Road in Harrison around noon, after receiving a report that a stolen vehicle could be found at the address.

Upon arrival, deputies identified Thomas Hughes, who tried to escape in a vehicle he had been working on, according to the release.

Hughes ignored commands to stop the vehicle and recklessly drove the vehicle in the direction of the deputies, causing one of the officers to fire his weapon at least once, the release said

Hughes managed to flee the scene, but the vehicle he was driving was soon located, but authorities believe Hughes escaped into a wooded area.

The car Hughes used to escape was stolen, along with another one at the residence, according to the release.

A warrant has been obtained for Hughes, who is charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment with a weapon.

The investigation remains ongoing.
