UTC opens well in Baras tourney and other sports news

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis players won 10 of 12 matches Friday, including eight of nine in singles, in the opening day of the annual UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic. The Mocs' Kayla Jones won 6-2, 6-2 over Jacksonville State's Olivia Nguyen in the top Blue Draw, and Kaylene Chadwell and Kelsey Coots won in straight sets over UT-Martin and Lipscomb players in the Choo Choo Draw. Samantha Caswell won 6-0, 6-2 in the Good Draw, Claire Mulyadi won 6-1, 6-1 in the Lookout Mountain Draw, Alison Storie and Rachele Gazzola won in straight sets in the Tennessee River Draw, and Katie Polk won 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 over Middle Tennessee's Alexandra Torres in the North Shore Draw. The Jones/Coots and Caswell/Chadwell doubles teams each won 8-3. In men's play Friday, Mocs juniors Nick Wingord and John Peacey won in the main draw, No. 2 seed Wingord 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (15-13) over Lipscomb's Rob Mitchell in flight one and Peacey with two straight-sets wins in flight 2. Both also won 8-3 in doubles, Peacey with Nic Wilson and Wingord with Luke Saunders.

Volleyball

• Lauren Gainer made 13 kills and Nicole Sumida had 11 as UTC downed The Citadel 3-0 in a Southern Conference volleyball match Friday in Maclellan Gym. The set scores were 25-20, 25-14, 25-22. Also for the Mocs (8-10, 1-2), Lauren Greenspoon had 26 assists and Anne Bachmann contributed 14, and Catherine Chason, Allie Davenport and Brianna Guzinski had 14, 13 and 11 digs. Bailey Kernodle and Lauren Hurt had nine and eight kills for The Citadel (5-12, 0-3).

• Covenant College beat both Averett and Ferrum 3-0 in USA South volleyball Friday in Danville, Va. In the 25-15, 25-21, 25-20 win over host Averett, the Lady Scots (15-6, 5-1) got 12 kills from Chelsea VanDyk, 10 kills and 12 digs from Ginny Moore and 15 assists, 17 digs and eight kills from Schuyler Moore. Stephanie Kirkpatrick added 14 assists and Chloe Carlson had 14 digs. Schuyler Moore had 31 assists with seven kills in the 25-15, 25-19, 25-13 conquest of Ferrum, while Ginny had 12 digs and VanDyk had nine kills.

• Christian Brothers defeated Lee 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-16) in Gulf South Conference volleyball Friday night in Memphis. Brooke Wilsman led Lee (5-8, 3-5) with nine kills, while Haley Foote and Sadie Johnson had 16 and 14 assists and Stephanie Hernandez had 14 digs. Foote also had three aces.

• Tennessee Wesleyan beat visiting Montreat 3-1 (22-25, 25-14, 27-25, 25-21) in Appalachian Athletic Conference volleyball Friday. TWC is 6-10 overall, 4-3 in the AAC.

• Dalton State pulled out a dramatic 3-2 volleyball win Friday night at Martin Methodist, prevailing 18-25, 25-21, 18-25, 25-17, 17-15. Kianna Delaney had 16 kills, Anna Metzler had 13 kills with 16 digs, Savannah Nelson and Alyne Bianchi added 12 and 10 kills and Michala Askew had 40 assists for DSC (8-6).

• Former Cleveland High School volleyball players Kristen Pickett and Payton Tipton had 27 assists for Carson-Newman and 17 digs for King, respectively, in Friday matches. CNU won 3-0 over Coker; King lost 3-1 to Southern Wesleyan.

Soccer

• West Florida came away with a win and a tie in Gulf South soccer matches Friday evening against Lee University in Cleveland. Hixson High School graduate and Chattanooga Football Club coach Bill Elliott is the UWF men's coach. His Argonauts (3-3-2, 2-0-1) played Lee (5-2-2, 0-0-1) to a scoreless tie despite a 19-10 shots deficit after the UWF women edged Lee 2-1. Nicole Blanchard one-timed a tying goal from a Kinsey Cichowitz assist for the Lady Flames (4-4-1, 3-1) 15 minutes into the second half, but April Sime broke the tie two minutes later from a double-assist off a corner kick.

• Western Carolina won 4-0 over UTC in Southern Conference women's soccer Friday night at Finley Stadium, dropping the Mocs to 1-9-1 overall and 0-2 in the league. Taylor Webb, Madison Lee, Sara Robinson and Courtney Rosu scored the goals for WCU (5-3-4, 2-0-1), and junior Kelly Pannell from Sale Creek and Baylor School assisted on Webb's at 13:59. The Catamounts had margins of 23-3 in shots and 12-1 in corner kicks, and Hannah Dunn made eight saves for UTC.

• The Tennessee Temple women's soccer team scored five first-half goals and won 8-0 over Grace Bible College from Michigan in a match Friday at Grace Academy. Liz Miller and Paris Bentley netted two goals each and Kimberlyn Warden, Courtney Elswick, Shelby Cornelius and Brenda Valseques also scored for Temple (2-7).

Golf

• The UTC women's golf team opens play today in the Diane Thomason Invitational tournament in Iowa City, Iowa. The field at Finkbine Golf Course includes 13 teams.
