VW global sales may hit record 10 million for 2014

The Volkswagen Group today reported sales of 7.4 million vehicles from January to September, up 5.3 percent from 2013, and the company said it has a chance to sell 10 million cars and trucks worldwide for the year for the first time.

In September, the company handed over 881,300 vehicles, up 3 percent.

Group Board Member for Sales Christian Klingler said in a statement in Wolfsburg, Germany, that even though markets remain challenging, VW has the chance to reach the 10 million sales mark this year - four years earlier than it originally planned.

China sales grew 15.2 percent to 2.72 million through September.

Group brands delivered a total of 2.9 million vehicles to customers in the overall European market from January to September, up 6.4 percent.

Russia and North America reported drops in sales in the period, with the U.S. off 5.1 percent. But, VW is hoping to jumpstart sales in America with a new sport utility vehicle built in Chattanooga starting in late 2016.
