Former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga golfers Jonathan Hodge and Bryce Ledford advanced Friday from the first stage of Web.Com tour qualifying at The Standard Club at Johns Creek, Ga. Hodge shot a 17-under-par 271 for four rounds and tied for third behind former Middle Tennessee State golfer Jason Millard, the medalist at 267. Ledford shot 7 under and tied for 22nd place, easily inside the top 31 and ties who advanced. Paul Apyan of Hixson missed by one stroke. Chattanoogan Ryan Thornton and former Mocs golfer Steven Fox missed by five.

Tennis

• Second-seeded Zan Guerry and Ned Caswell of Chattanooga were lined up against fourth-seeded Jeffrey Burnett of North Palm Beach, Fla., and Mitchell Perkins of Seattle in the USTA National Men's 50 Clay Court doubles semifinals at Sarasota, Fla. With a win, the Manker Patten Tennis Club duo could face top-seeded Andrew Stoner of Cave Creek, Ariz., and Ken White of Elma, N.Y., for the championship. White and another partner defeated Guerry and Caswell in three sets in the grass court nationals in late August, after Guerry and Caswell edged Burnett and Perkins in three. Stoner was the grass singles champion.

Running

• A special RiverRocks addition to the Salomon Rock/Creek Trail Series is the Salomon CityTrail set for Oct. 25. It's a "hybrid trail and road running event," as described on www.rockcreek.com, with 30- and 10-kilometer options costing $65 each and starting at 8 a.m. at Renaissance Park. Pre-registered participants can pick up packets 4-7 p.m. on Oct. 24 at the Renaissance Park pavilion. Online registration closes at noon on Oct. 23, but race-day registration is planned from 6 to 7:30 a.m. that Saturday.

Soccer

• The UNC Greensboro women's soccer team improved to 7-4-3 overall and 3-0-1 in the Southern Conference with a 9-0 home win Friday night against UTC. The Spartans led 3-0 by halftime against the Mocs (1-11-1, 0-4).

• Suzanne Arant's unassisted goal 12 minutes into overtime gave Lee University a 1-0 Gulf South Conference women's soccer victory Friday evening at West Alabama, which had won nine in a row. Then UWA won the men's game 1-0 despite being outshot 13-8; the goal was scored by Connor McDermott with just under 10 minutes left in regulation time. The Lady Flames improved to 6-4-1 overall and 4-1 in the GSC while administering the 9-2 Tigers' first loss in six league matches. Marbel Egwuenu had four saves in the shutout.

• Stefan Cyvin's 59th-minute goal held up for a 1-0 Methodist win against Covenant in USA South men's soccer Friday at Fayetteville, N.C. That was the first league loss of the season for the Scots (7-4-2, 3-1-1), who were outshot 10-3 by their 8-2-1 hosts. The Methodist women won 3-1 with Ruth Terry scoring for the Lady Scots (6-8-1, 4-3), whose shots deficit was 16-6.

Field Hockey

• Sewanee's Allegra Massey-Elim broke a scoreless tie early in the second half, but Rhodes responded with five goals by five players in a 5-1 Southern Athletic Association field hockey win Friday in Memphis. The Lynx (8-2, 4-1) outshot the Tigers 21-6 and had a 19-3 margin in penalty corners over the Tigers (4-6, 2-3).

Swimming & Diving

• The Sewanee swimming and diving teams will open their seasons today in Louisville, Ky., by taking on Centre, Washington & Lee and Birmingham-Southern. The meet starts at 1 p.m. The Sewanee teams include returning first-team All-Southern Athletic Association selections Jackson Cromer, Edward Dennis and Caty Hueske, the SAA women's newcomer of the year.
