Central High School will announce officially its second Hall of Fame class in a ceremony at 5:45 p.m. Friday.

A barbecue dinner will follow from 6 to 7:15 p.m. in the school cafeteria.

The eight additions to the hall are Bobby Etter, a member of the Purple Pounders' undefeated 1962 team; Reuben "Choo-Choo" Justice, a member of the 1969 football team and a state champion wrestler who played at Middle Tennessee State before becoming a principal at Orchard Knob; Ray Moss Jr., a 1955 graduate who was co-founder of Golden Gallon and an All-SEC football pick at Tennessee; David Owen, a 1985 graduate who played baseball at Carson-Newman before being drafted and playing five seasons in the Boston Red Sox organization; softball player and later Central coach Andrea Roark, an all-Ohio Valley Conference player and Academic All-American at Tennessee Tech; Gary Rundles, former Central baseball coach and currently the coach at West Alabama; Gordon Smith, longtime Central basketball coach and teacher (1952-1974); and Wayne Standefer, an all-state basketball player for Smith in 1954-55 who went on to play at Tennessee Tech.

The inductees will be recognized prior to the homecoming game vs. Howard that is scheduled to kick off at 7:30.

Dinner reservations can be made by calling the school (423-344-1447) or Judy Phillips at 423-503-7413.

GPS visits BA

GPS, the sixth-seeded team from the East/Middle Region, will play at fifth-seeded Brentwood Academy today at 6 p.m. EDT in an opening-round match in the TSSAA Divison II-AA volleyball playoffs.

GPS (17-26) lost 3-1 to BA in its final regular-season match but lost no set by more than seven points.

"We had our opportunities but didn't capitalize on them," Bruisers coach Paul Brock said. "We had our up-and-down moments. The game we beat them, we passed really well."

The kills, blocks and assists leaders for the Bruisers are, in order, seniors Angela Bonds, Cami Shands and Reagan Williams. Junior Jenna Simpson leads in digs and aces.

Brock said serving and passing will be keys for his team.

"We played a lot better teams better than we played them," Brock said of the Lady Eagles.

Baylor (39-8) won two of three matches over the weekend, with a 3-1 loss to Father Ryan being the region champion's only loss in 12 league matches this season. The East/Middle's top-seeded Lady Red Raiders have a bye until the state quarterfinals.

Tornado third

Coming off a loss to Brentwood Academy, McCallie dropped to third in the state football Division II-AA poll behind BA and Ensworth, a team it embarrassed just three weeks ago. Ensworth actually garnered three first-place votes.

Unbeaten Ooltewah somehow dropped a notch despite a lopsided win over Walker Valley and now stands fourth in Class 5A. Signal Mountain remained eighth in Class 4A after an open date, while Notre Dame, the only team to beat the Eagles this year, remained No. 4 in Class 3A. Marion County is still No. 4 in Class 2A and South Pittsburg, a Friday loser to Boyd-Buchanan, dropped two spots to No. 10 in Class 1A.
