Carson-Newman seniors Rachel Harper and Kristen Pickett from Chattanooga-area high schools were the South Atlantic Conference volleyball honorees for last week's matches. Harper, an outside hitter from Boyd-Buchanan, was the player of the week for her 44 kills, 44 digs and nine aces in three wins, while setter Pickett from Cleveland High was the specialist of the week after totaling 112 assists, 29 digs and six aces. Pickett then was named the Women Play Ball Division II national athlete of the week. CNU improved to 15-4, 11-1 in the SAC, with a 3-2 win Tuesday at Mars Hill in which Pickett had 50 assists and nine digs and Harper had 17 kills and 23 digs. In a 3-2 Conference Carolinas loss at Lees-McRae, Payton Tipton from Cleveland High had 18 digs for King (11-9, 5-4).

• Jasmine Crook, Anna Graham and Elizabeth Dowd had 13, 12 and 11 kills as Shorter University (14-3, 12-1) beat Lee 3-1 in a Gulf South volleyball match Tuesday night in Cleveland. Latrice Johnson had 12 kills, 16 digs and three aces for Lee (6-12, 4-8) in the 25-20, 25-16, 26-28, 25-18 match, and Lauren Williams and Brooke Wilsman added eight kills each. Sadie Johnson had 20 assists and 11 digs, and Stephanie Hernandez had 22 digs.

• Covenant College freshman Ginny Moore was the USA South volleyball rookie of the week and had 13 kills and nine digs in Tuesday's 3-1 league loss (25-21, 24-26, 25-18, 25-8) at Maryville (16-6, 9-0). She averaged 4.1 kills and 1.8 digs per set in three wins last week, with 15 kills in one and 12 in another. Also Tuesday, Schuyler Moore had eight kills and 14 assists and Stephanie Kirkpatrick set 15 assists.

• The Tennessee Temple volleyball team improved to 16-10 with a 3-0 win (25-21, 25-16, 25-19) Tuesday at Johnson University in Knoxville. Victoria Smith had 10 kills and five blocks, Naomi Posada had nine kills and 16 digs, Lydia Vick made 14 digs and Amy Keokanlaya served four aces for TTU.

• Michala Askew had 39 assists and 10 digs and Alyne Bianchi and Wendy Perez had 14 and 13 kills in Dalton State's 3-2 Southern States Athletic Conference volleyball loss Tuesday at Reinhardt (12-7, 7-3). DSC (9-7, 5-4) was without Anna Metzler, who has an injured ankle, and Kianna Delaney and Savannah Nelson added eight and seven kills in the 22-25, 25-11, 25-13, 16-25, 15-7 defeat.

• Union College beat Tennessee Wesleyan 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-16) in an Appalachian Athletic Conference volleyball match Tuesday at Barbourville, Ky. Second-place Union is 19-8, 8-1 in league play; TWC is 6-13, 4-6.

Golf

• The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's Liam Johnston tied for second place individually at 6-under-par 138 and his team took third place when the last round of the 12-team AutoTrader.com Collegiate tournament was rained out Tuesday in Duluth, Ga. The Mocs had a 568 for Monday's two rounds, six shots behind winner UNC Greensboro, and Wes Gosselin tied for 14th at 143 with Andrew Weathers and Ewan Scott sharing 26th at 145.

• Dalton State's Sean Elliott and Maximilian Bruck finished tied for third and sixth, respectively, in the State Farm Intercollegiate golf tournament at Tazewell, Tenn., and the Roadrunners were third out of 12 teams. The scheduled final round Tuesday was canceled.

• Sewanee's Emily Javadi from Chattanooga tied for eighth individually at 229 with a 78 Tuesday in the 17-team Golfweek Division III Fall Preview tournament at Baytowne Golf Club in Sandestin, Fla., and her former Baylor School teammate Alyssa Brown of Centre College tied for 27th at 242.

Football

• Maryville College junior defensive lineman Zach Capehart from Silverdale Baptist Academy was the USA South football defensive player of the week after being in on nine tackles and making 4.5 tackles for loss in a 23-13 win Saturday over Ferrum. The Ooltewah resident had three sacks totaling 21 lost yards and a pass breakup in the game.

Soccer

• Covenant senior forward Ian Meredith was the USA South men's soccer player of the week for the second time this season for his two goals and an assist in Saturday's 4-1 win at North Carolina Wesleyan.

Running

• Dalton State sophomore Natalie Hensley from Heritage High School is the SSAC women's cross country runner of the week after winning LaGrange's meet Saturday at Callaway Gardens. Her 5-kilometer time was nearly 4.5 seconds faster than the runner-up, and DSC finished second by a point in the team standings.

Boxing

• The Red Bank Boxing Club will begin practice for the 2014-15 season Thursday at 4:30 p.m. There is no cost, and experience level does not matter. Practices generally will be held Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday of each week. For more information call Skipper Fairbanks at 877-4113.
